Mitsubishi Ductless Mini-Split: Clean Air, No Smell, No Mold

There’s nothing worse than a room filled with stuffy air, especially during the heat of summer. It’s smelly like a dirty sock, it’s stale, and it’s just plain uncomfortable. On top of that, stale air can be an indicator of a bigger problem like mold hiding throughout your home. If you notice stuffy, unpleasant odors in your home, it’s important to address them immediately. Energy Monster can help fix the problem and prevent the unpleasant odors from getting worse. protect your home from long-term complications resulting from untreated mold or mildew, and improve the indoor air quality with a mini-split air system.

What Causes Stuffy Air?

The first step to getting rid of this “dirty sock syndrome” smell is understanding why you have the problem in the first place. Stuffy air typically happens in rooms that are closed off and lacking ventilation. Think about the rooms in your house that get the stuffiest. The basement, attic, and any rooms that lack regular foot traffic probably come to mind. The longer a room is closed off, the stuffier it becomes, resulting in larger and more expensive maintenance problems within a home. Stuffy air can sometimes indicate that a room retains moisture in the walls, ceilings, or floors. This is very bad for the health of your home; when moisture goes untreated, it breeds mold and mildew, which produces an unpleasant, dirty sock odor. While simply getting rid of stuffy-smelling air with a window fan or air conditioner may be your top-of-mind priority, you may want to consider alternatives such as updating your HVAC systems. It is even more important to consider its possible causes and to address them as soon as possible.

Tips for Banishing Stuffy Air in Your Home

As you can probably guess, the first step to dealing with stuffy-smelling air is to get rid of it. The best thing to try first is to circulate air within your home. Here are some of our top suggestions:

Ventilate the room.

The first step to getting the stuffiness out is to give the stale air a place to go. Make sure your home ventilation is working effectively. Open windows and doors, and turn on ceiling fans to get things circulating. If you have a central cooling system in your home, now is the time to run it or have a professional conduct maintenance and get it running. Circulating the air and giving it a place to escape will leave your space smelling better and feeling fresher.

Make use of fans.

Not every room in a house has windows, and not every home has A/C. Those who lack these amenities can use fans to your advantage, instead. The point of a fan is to circulate air. Investing in a fan or two will help maximize circulation in rooms without windows or A/C. Forcing the air in a room to move will prevent that stale smell. We recommend turning on those fans often to keep your home smelling fresh and help with mold control. Getting rid of the bad smell is the first step towards ridding your home of stuffy air. Once that’s gone, you may still be left with a stale smell in certain areas of the house. Often, this is caused by the things you can’t see, like mold or mildew inside furniture, walls, or carpet. If these causes aren’t addressed, the air quality in your home will never fully improve. Here are several more tips to help you get rid of the smell for good.

Use a dehumidifier.

If moisture is at the root of your problem, the best thing you can do is get rid of it. A dehumidifier or air conditioner can take moisture out of the air in any given room and is a good place to start. Taking moisture out of the air will prevent your home from absorbing moisture, the root cause of most water damage within Florida homes. A ductless mini-split can also act as a dehumidifier…and we’ll talk about this HVAC system at the end of this article.

Take it outside.

If you can move items in your home like furniture or rugs, place them outside on a sunny day. Light from the sun can kill bacteria and mold hiding in these items and carry away the musty, bad smell with the wind. Cleaning the area the furniture was originally placed can also help with ridding the moldy smell.

Use baking soda.

Baking soda is a great all-purpose cleaner and can be used in all sorts of environments. Sprinkle some on a musty-smelling carpet and leave it to do its work. After a day or two, all you need to do is vacuum up the leftover powder. This simple trick should leave your rugs smelling fresh and clean without breaking the bank.

Make use of vinegar.

Another economical solution, vinegar, is an effective cleaner because it kills bacteria. Put some in a spray bottle and use it on areas of your stuffy room that smell particularly bad. It will evaporate on its own, taking the bad smell with it.

These mini-split units are split into two components (hence the name mini-splits): an outdoor condenser/compressor unit and the indoor handling unit. The HVAC units can be controlled from a smart device using either a hand-held remote or wall-mounted thermostat, but there’s also an app that you can use to control your temperature anywhere. This heating and cooling system creates an easy way to keep your home at comfortable temperatures, even when you are away. Mitsubishi Mini-Splits have a cooling system that is in constant communication with the outdoor unit. This allows you to never worry about adjusting your thermostat again.

Keeps the Air in Your Home Clean & Filtered

To keep your Mitsubishi mini-split air conditioning system working at its best, you should regularly clean the filters. There are three different types of filters available for use with this HVAC system: a deodorizing filter that traps and eliminates odors from the environment; an electrostatic filter designed specifically to remove allergens such as mold, mildew spores, pet dander, or pollen in addition to trapping them, so they do not circulate back into the atmosphere. The non-replaceable semi-permanent N filter is a Nano platinum water purifier. This first layer of defense against bacteria and viruses can be washed, but nano platinum has superior antibacterial properties, unlike the common catechin (green tea bioflavonoid).
