Money is very important in the eyes of the world, but God sees it as a very small thing. It’s what we do with money that is important to God. In far too many lives, money has first place. Many times people don’t realize they are in reality worshipping money. This is far from God’s designed plan for mankind. Haggai 2:8, “The silver is mine and the gold is mine,” declares the Lord Almighty.” God is the owner but we are his managers, to whom he has given the responsibility for the things of this life. We are accountable to the true owner to be faithful in how we use God’s money. Proverbs 3:9, 10 “ Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats be bursting with wine.” Deuteronomy 15:10 “Give generously to the poor not grudgingly for the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.” Those are promises from God. Any money God gives you has the potential to be used for selfish desires or for God’s agenda. I have heard many people say, “Show me a person’s checkbook and I will tell you where their heart is.” I remember when my husband and I were much younger. We had four children and had just moved into our own first home. We were in a financial bind. We tried to consolidate all our bills, but we could not find a loan company to help us. The debt was too high and our income too low. In other words, we were beyond help. My husband was working on our budget after our plea for help was rejected and when I looked at his figures, I saw where he added a weekly tithe for our church. I was very upset as a young Christian and not very committed or knowledgeable about God’s word and I said, “No way we can’t give to the church. We can’t even pay what we owe people.” My husband responded, “We can’t afford to not give our tithe to God. He is the only one who can help us keep our home and come out from under this financial crisis.” To my amazement, within a few months, God had provided a part time job for my husband to cover the finances we needed. My husband was healthy and willing to sacrifice. We were very careful how we spent our money and stuck to our budget. We didn’t buy any name brand clothes or shoes, but we had clean clothes, a nice home, and A-1 credit report. All our needs were met and we were content and thankful for what God was doing. God blessed us with good health, a job, and wonderful friends and family and thankfully we didn’t have to borrow to survive.

When we release our grip on money, we break free from the power money has in our lives. Giving keeps us from spiraling down the destructive path of greed. In the act of giving, we worship God because we acknowledge it is God’s money. Hebrews 13:16, “Do not neglect to do good and share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Whether we have been blessed with much or with little financial giving, no matter how much, is a way to do the Lord’s work. As God has blessed you, you can bless others. True love for Jesus causes us to want to love others and be a blessing. There are many ways to be a blessing. Money is one way and usually one that many people need for the necessities of this life. Remember to stay focused on what matters the most and God’s faithfulness.

How can we honor God with money?

First, ask God for wisdom in financial matters, handle your money honestly, pay all what you owe them, put your money to work for God’s purposes, and practice being content with what God has given you. Soon it will be who you are in Him and a peace and joy will come over you.

Above all, thank God for his many blessings and incredible faithfulness.

You can’t buy good health, you can’t buy love, you can’t buy contentment, and you can’t buy eternal life. You can’t buy God’s wonderful promises or that precious Holy Spirit that guides, protects, and helps us along this journey of life.
