Learn More »Thumbing through photo albums has become a near annual ritual in our house over the festive period. Usually, after one too many Christmas tipples, it's my dad who insists on hauling out the tatty albums and showing us relics of our childhood. In the sticky plastic wallets, there are snaps of my parents frolicking on a beach in Crete as teenagers, blurry shots of forgotten family pets and unflattering images of my brother and I in various stages of our youth. Of course, the ability to make new memories such as these are limited by the nationwide lockdown. But that doesn’t mean we can’t use time in isolation to delve into the treasure troves of old photos - and reap the rewards. New research from the photo printing company CEWE suggests that looking back at our photos can significantly improve our mood and overall wellbeing. Over a fifth of people surveyed look back at their old photos multiple times a week, and 65 percent of people said this made them feel nostalgic, while 56 percent said they felt happy when doing so. A further 31 percent said looking at old photos made them feel relaxed, and 14 percent said it inspired them. The research also found that looking back at old photographs is one of the nation’s favourite ways to relax, second only to having a bath. But despite this, 41 percent of us only look back at our photos once or twice a year. I'm not an overly sentimental person. But at the beginning of this year, I felt prompted to create a physical photo collection of my own. Looking through my family albums, it dawned on me that despite having immediate access to approximately 14,000 photos on my iPhone, few of them held much relevance. The vast majority were screenshots of old train tickets and pictures of broken furniture to show our landlord. I'm taking more photos than ever, but they hold far fewer memories. After sifting through the masses of images, I sent a bundle off to Snapfish - a photo printing service - and bought a leather photo album from Amazon. While I can't recreate the nostalgia of the Polaroids offered by my parent's albums, looking through the images has become a small, secret slice of pleasure in which to indulge. And it is often the mundane photos that provide the greatest enjoyment. From a side shot of my housemate eating a plate of potato waffles in bed (taken shortly after a break up) to images of our former pet rabbit chewing the TV cable, each tells a small story of my early twenties. Now, as I see out lockdown from my parents' house, they remind me of a time when life was free. And it seems the trend for looking at old photos is catching. The #MeAt20 challenge - which encouraged people to share a picture of them when they were 20 - proved popular on social media. Celebrities including Nigella Lawson, Piers Morgan and Carol Voderman all jumped on the bandwagon to share (suspiciously attractive) snaps of them in their youth. Similarly, photo sharing apps such as Instagram have seen an influx of ‘throwback’ pictures from millennials eager to share pictures of themselves in happier times.
