STAMFORD -- Ten years ago, at 10:21 p.m. on New Year's Eve in 1999, Keisha Nielsen gave birth to the last Stamford baby of the century. Destiny Day Nielsen was delivered and wrapped in a millennium blanket less than two hours before the ball dropped and the new decade began. "Giving birth to Destiny and being pregnant was one of the most beautiful things I've experienced," Keisha said. "She doesn't realize it now, either, but when she's older, New Year's Eve will be a fun birthday for her." For now at least, Destiny doesn't seem to mind sharing her birthday with a holiday. "I like it," she said. "It's fun to watch everyone celebrating on TV and we always do something special, too." Destiny celebrated her 10th birthday and rang in 2010 Thursday with a new iPod Shuffle -- a gadget that didn't exist until October 2001 -- and memories of the last 10 years. Keisha: It was so easy until the last trimester. By then I was ready for her to come out. It was completely planned, but took 22 hours. She just wanted to stay there, I guess. But I knew she'd be born New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. Destiny: I remember before I was born; being in mom's stomach. It was crowded in there. Destiny: There were a lot of crying kids because they thought their parents were leaving them. We were all happy when they came back, though. I remember being scared being alone all day without my mom and dad. I was shy in the beginning. Keisha: Oh wow, it was exciting and scary, you know? Your baby's growing up. My little girl that I saw through diapers and bottles and feedings and day care was going to school. We taught her the ABCs, and dressed her up. Jeff (her husband) and I took off of work; it was like our first day. Destiny: I just saw the movie "The Princess and the Frog" and that's my new favorite movie right now. It was really funny and there was a lot of singing and dancing. I really like Disney. Keisha: My favorite movies to watch with Destiny were the "Shrek" series. I think the first one came out in 2001.

Destiny: Mom really likes a lot of hip-hop and R&B, but I don't think I have a favorite. I really like Disney and some hip-hop, too though.

Keisha: She's right. I really like Mary J. Blige and Keyshia Cole.

Destiny: I really like Nickelodeon cartoons.

Keisha: After I gave birth to Destiny, my sister got me hooked on the SoapNET shows. There was something calming about watching these dramatic lives in TV shows while I was giving birth. A couple years after that, I was hooked to them. (Editor's note: In The Advocate story from 1999, Keisha said, "I was watching soap operas . . . that kept me focused.") Destiny: I really like playing on the laptop on the different Web sites. I like Farmville. And now I have an iPod, which is really cool. Keisha: The laptop and the cell phone have just made so much possible that wasn't before. I'm taking classes online, I can be reached by phone whenever I'm out or at work. Technology is so smart now. Destiny: In 2008, Barack Obama became the 44th president of the United States. We didn't have school because it was where all the parents went to vote. And I remember it was a cold, snowy day in January when he was inaugurated. We spent a lot of time talking about it at school. Keisha: For me, the most significant day in the past 10 years was Sept. 11. Destiny was just a baby and I was at work and no one had any idea what was happening. We turned on the TVs and saw the planes fly into the World Trade Center and in D.C. Everyone was crying and frantic. It was a surreal day.
