In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna about those who are dear to Him, said Valayapet Ramachariar, in a discourse. Lord Krishna says that a man who does not invoke fear in others, who is himself not afraid of anyone, whose feelings towards all are the same — such a man is dear to Him. A man who has no sense of ‘I,’ and no sense of possession has no cause to hate anyone. Nor does he have to fear anyone. He who eats pure food, who is not bothered by heat or cold which he faces during performance of his duties — such a person is dear to the Lord. A person who does not rejoice when he gets something that would delight others, who is unaffected even when he faces something that in others would cause sorrow and he who has given up all acts of merit and demerit — such a person is dear to the Lord. Sinful acts lead us to hell, and punya leads us to svarga, which is only a temporary phase. Once our punya is exhausted, we will be back on earth. So, if acts of sins are chains of iron, acts of merit are chains of gold. He who treats friend and enemy alike, who is unaffected by joy, sorrow, who remains silent whether he is praised or abused, who has no attachment towards anything — such a person is dear to the Lord. The Lord says that those who practise bhakti yoga with a view to attaining Him are dear to Him. Bhakthi yoga when it is resorted with the sole aim of reaching Him will yield results quickly. For this, we need to constantly think of His auspicious qualities. Constructing temples and performing activities related to the temple will help us contemplate his kalyana gunas, and these too should be for the Lord’s delight. Doing the acts that we need to do without thoughts of the fruits, leads us in the right direction.
