“And the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided,” reads Exodus, chapter 14. Sounds unlikely? Probably, but apart from the “LORD” bit, physics doesn’t think it’s impossible. Bible-backing science has suggested that a planet or supernova may have guided the Magi, and that Noah’s flood might have been the filling of the Black Sea when a natural dam succumbed to the Mediterranean’s waters. Now computer simulations show that a stiff wind blowing from the east for 12 hours could have given the Israelites a land bridge that allowed them to escape Egypt over 3000 years ago. The 5-kilometre width of the cleared mud flats might have offered enough space for a few hundred thousand Israelites to cross, but against winds raging at 100 kilometres per hour, they probably would have needed most of their 4-hour window to walk the 3 or 4-kilometres to the opposite shore. “Nobody’s going to enjoy it,” says Carl Drews of the National Center for Atmospheric Research at Boulder, Colorado, one of the researchers who has simulated the Israelite-friendly wind. “But if the alternative is to be killed by the pharaoh’s soldiers, they’d do it.”

Storm surge

Bible scholars and others interested in the flight of Moses have previously looked to the Gulf of Suez for a possible location of the fabled crossing. Here there is a raised region of the seabed that suggests a potential land bridge, but it’s too deep by 6 or 7 metres to make it feasible as a crossing point now. Even if it was nearer the surface during the time of pharaohs, the parting wind would have had to come from the north-west, and at 117 kilometres per hour, the wind speeds required are even nearer to the maximum human beings can withstand. He thinks the true site of the Israelites’ escape was a small protrusion of land that juts out between the Pelusiac branch of the Nile, on the eastern side of the river delta, and the Lake of Tanis, which was situated in much the place as the modern Lake Manzala. This location would fit the description of a “Reed Sea”, which is gaining ground as the correct translation of the Hebrew yam suf in place of “Red Sea” – reeds grow in the brackish waters of the modern lagoon. But reconstructing the Nile delta 3250 years ago, as Drews’s University of Colorado colleague Weiqing Han did, is no easy task.

The ancient geography south of the Lake of Tanis is fairly well established, says Drews, but there is some contention as to whether the lagoon was cordoned off from the open ocean by a sandbar or not in biblical times. He points to sediment cores taken in the 1980s and 90s that strengthen the argument that the waters were a protected lake. Assuming the sandbar existed, an easterly 100-kilometre-per-hour gale would have needed a little over 8 hours to blow the water in the Lake of Tanis westward and back up into the Pelusiac branch of the Nile, parting the waters around the peninsula from which Drews and Han assume the crossing party would have started. Without the sandbar, the wind would have had to blow at 117 kilometres per hour to allow sufficient crossing time.

Blown off their feet?

Brian Golding of the UK Met Office says that this effect may well have caused a miraculous opening of the waters somewhere, but even at a more modest 100 kilometres per hour, he doubts that sustained winds of sufficient strength could have been achieved near the Lake of Tanis. He is also dubious about whether people could walk through that kind of wind. “In Boulder we get 85-mile-per-hour [137 kilometres per hour] winds every few years. Although it’s not much fun, we can still manage to walk across the parking lot,” Drews replies. For evidence that similar wind conditions can occur near the Nile delta, he refers to the account of a British general, Alexander Tulloch, who claimed to have witnessed the waters of Lake Manzala pushed back 11 kilometres by a strong easterly wind in 1882.
