Where are the Bali Gates Of Heaven located?

Pura Luhur Lempuyang, or the gates of heaven and temple are located in East Bali in the region of Lempuyang. It’s located among the highlands of Mount Lempuyang at a height of 1,775m above sea level. There are actually 7 different areas/temples within the complex, but most people simply flock to the “gates of heaven”. It’s definitely worth visiting the other temples too as they are just as beautiful. The steepest one sits atop a mountain and you need to climb 1,700 steps. I did not do this, and since this post is for the purpose of the Bali gates of heaven, I’ll give that a miss!

What time should I visit the Bali Gates Of Heaven?

Early, early and early! So, I went to this temple first thing in the morning and just before sunset and the queues were long all day long. If you want that iconic Instagram picture, then you’re going to have to wait. I suggest you head early and be among the first there. The shortest queue time is around 1 hour but some people have waited up to 2-3 hours. I waited one hour, which wasn’t too bad as I was with my sister and we drank coffee and chatted!

How long do I have to queue for the Bali Gates of Heaven?

Again as mentioned above, the queue time can range from 1 hour to up to 4 hours. It all depends how much you want that picture. But if you go just before the sun rises then your wait will be less.

How much is the entrance to the Gates of Heaven in Bali?

There is no technical entrance fee, but a donation is required. You’ll also need a sarong to cover you, regardless of whether you’re already covered (I had a long skirt on), and the donation covers that.

How do I get to the Gates of Heaven in Bali?

So, there is no “public” transport to the gates of heaven, so if you want to visit, you have a few options. Rent a moped: You can rent a moped and drive to the area yourself, but please get a moped that’s good quality because you’re going to be winding up a steep mountain and you’ll need power to get up there. Trust me! You can book a moped online here. Rent a car/driver: You can easily rent a driver for the day in Bali and actually an easy way to do it is through the Grab app. You can rent a driver for 2-6 hours which will be enough time to take you to the gates of heaven. Take a tour: I visited the Gates of Heaven with a ForeverVacaition Bali Instagram Tour and it was epic. It’s the first stop of the tour, which is a good thing because of how busy it gets. So if you’re looking for convenience and a chance to visit all the best sights in east Bali and more, then a tour is the way to go.

Is there water at the Bali Gates of Heaven?

Okay, so we’ve all seen the picture of the reflection that makes it look like there is water. There is no water. This is a mirror reflection trick, and I actually think it’s great. The views look amazing without the camera trick, but the camera trick makes for a really cool photo that you can print out and hang in your home. Now, if you want a picture that has the volcano in the background, it cannot be guaranteed. It depends on the cloud and whether it’s visible or not. When I visited, there was no way you could see the volcano-- you wouldn’t even believe a volcano was there! But, I still think my pictures turned out really awesome thanks to the mirror reflection….

Important information about Lempuyang temple

You have to remember the gates of heaven in Bali is a religious temple, so you need to be respectful. Some rules and information include: Cover up with a sarong, both men and women (remember to read our guide on what to wear in Bali)

No kissing allowed

Women are periods aren’t allowed in (although I’m not sure they can monitor that!)

No yoga poses

You can buy coffee/tea, other snacks outside the temple

You can’t fly a travel drone (no drones allowed over religious temples)

Where can I stay close to the Bali Gates Of Heaven?

There are lots of great places to stay in east Bali. You could stay near the coast in Amed and check out the amazing properties there. One of my favourites is Nalini Resort. Or, you could stay just 5 km from Lempuyang temple and 1km of Tirta Gangga Water Palace (another popular place to visit in Bali) at Cabe Bali, a beautiful property with a fabulous pool and located within the rice paddies!
