Q: Dear Pastor,

When I die will I become an angel?

A: I'm so glad you asked! I've wanted to address this issue for a long time. Our non-stop connection to electronic media; 24-hour news cycles and instantaneous disaster alerts from around the globe have shocked us into dealings with death on a daily basis. As a result, we reveal our beliefs about death in the public arena. We see spiritual leaders face the cameras as interviewers seek comforting quips just moments after the latest school shooting, terrorist attack or murderous crime against the innocent. They say things like, "I suppose God needed a few more angels in heaven," or "Grandma will be looking after us from up-above." Unfortunately, the idea that God needs anything is ridiculous since we rely on him, not the other way around. John 15:5. Further, just because our relatives are dead doesn't mean they suddenly possess angelic, super-human powers to exist in two dimensions. Neither of these feel-good ideas have the slightest connection with Biblical truth, as nice as they sound. No, you won't become an angel when you die. People are people and angels are angels -- they are two different species of God's creation. Suggesting that humans become angels is like saying dogs become horses after death. It can't be done since species don't swap. (The Evolution discussion is for another time. The Bible does not support this theory, FYI.) The confusion, I believe, comes from the numerous descriptions of the angelic hosts in the Bible. They are often depicted as human-like beings -- clearly not members of the lower animal kingdom, but close in likeness to mankind. So ... were angels also made in the image of God, then? The Bible doesn't say. What it does say, however, is that we are not angels. We're lower in rank. In Psalm 8:4, 5, King David questions God: "What is man that you are mindful of him? And the son of man that you visit him? For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and you have crowned him with glory and honor." (NASB) This term, "a little lower than the angels" has to do with creative hierarchy, of which angels are clearly a step up from where we stand. David is acknowledging Christ's fully-human existence on the earth by explaining that he was just like us for a season; a little lower than supernatural beings. Christ famously humbled himself by stepping down to the lower rung in order to become the sacrifice needed to save us. In addition, angels ministered to Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4, Mark 1), which explains that he indeed lowered himself to our celestial plane and needed assistance from heavenly hosts from time to time. Angels were designed to be God's worshipers and messengers; later forced to become warriors after Satan made his choice to exit heaven. So it's in the angelic job description to exist within multiple dimensions such has heaven and earth. We cannot. This is why we are given a new body when we die, though not an angelic one. Our body will be made new in order to endure the eternal atmosphere. The Apostle Paul described this eternal husk in detail in 1 Corinthians 15:51, 52 (TLB) as he proclaims humanity's final day on earth: "But I am telling you this strange and wonderful secret: we shall not all die, but we shall all be given new bodies! It will all happen in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For there will be a trumpet blast from the sky, and all the Christians who have died will suddenly become alive, with new bodies that will never, never die; and then we who are still alive shall suddenly have new bodies too."
