Learn about the Korean zodiac

Illustrations by francoillustration/123 RF

The zodiac is believed to have originated in China during the Han Dynasty over 2000 years ago. Many Asian cultures still use it today. According to Korean culture, every year is represented by one of 12 zodiac signs, which are known as the animals of the Sibijisin (say "shib-EE-jee-sheen"). It’s called Sibijisin because it’s a literal translation: sibi translates to 12 and jisin means Gods of the Earth. Read on to learn more about these signs and what they mean.

What is Sibijisin?

Sibijisin is the name for the 12 gods of the earth, which take the form of 12 animals. In Korea, every year is represented by a different animal. For instance, 2018 marks the year of the dog. The animals of the Sibijisin in order are: mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

Why are the animals so important?

In ancient times, these animals were seen as guardians that kept away evil spirits. They were also used by Koreans to measure time during the day. For example, the hours between 5:00 and 7:00 were called Myosi, which meant the Time of the Rabbit. The whole day was divided into 12 blocks of time, each representing one of the twelve animals of the Sibijisin. Each animal was believed to be a guardian that kept people safe during its particular time of day. These 12 guardians are so honoured by Koreans that statues of the animals of the Sibijisin have been built near royal sites.

What is the story?

Legend has it that these 12 animals took part in a contest. They swam across a river. And the gods decided that each animal’s final place in the race would determine their place in the order of the Sibijisin. According to some stories, the mouse jumped on the ox’s back before leaping ashore to capture first place. Then the other animals followed, setting the order.

What do the animals represent?

Each year is represented by its own animal. Just like this year is the year of the dog. And it’s believed that people born in a particular year have the characteristics of the animal that marks their birth year. For example, anyone born in 2018 is said to have the personality traits of the zodiac sign of the dog, meaning that they are honest and friendly.
