What spices did Jesus use?

John 19:39-40, “And there came also Niccodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night and bought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight. They took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews to bury the dead.”

Early on the first day of the week at dawn, the women came to the tomb of Jesus bringing spices they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the entrance to the tomb where Jesus was laid. When they went into the tomb, they could not find the body of Jesus. While they were looking for him, two men in shining clothes suddenly stood beside them. They were frightened at first. The men said to them, “Why are you looking for the living among the dead? He is not here, He Has raised from the dead. Do you remember what he told you in Galilee? He said the Son of Man must be handed over to sinful people, be crucified, and rise from the dead on the third day.” The women remembered what Jesus said. They then hurried and told these things to the 11 disciples, but they did not believe their report. Peter got up and ran to the tomb and all he found were the clothes Jesus’ body had been wrapped in. Some question the Resurrection of Christ. As we search the Scriptures, we find so much confirmation. Let us look at some verses that encourage our hearts and strengthen our faith. John 19:39-40, “And there came also Niccodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night and bought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight. They took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews to bury the dead.” Research tells us the Jewish burial customs were aromatic spices composed of fragments of fragrant wood pounded into a dust, known as aloes. It was mixed with a gummy substance known as myrrh. Starting at the feet, they would wrap the body with the linen cloth. Between the folds were placed the spices, mixed with this gummy substance. This method was used to preserve the body. Some believed in life after death. Joseph from Arimathia asked if he could take the body of Jesus. He was a wealthy man and could well afford to give Jesus the best and most expensive burial. Many ask how he could live three days after this process. Another argument is the size of the stone rolled in front of the entrance to the tomb. The doorway to the tomb was four and a half to five feet high. The stone would have to weight one to two tons.

Matthew 27:62-66 says the seal could only be placed on the stone. The Roman guard was to be in charge. The guard consisted of 4-10 men depending on the need. In this case, they would roll the stone and stretch a cord across the rock. Then they were ordered to keep watch for three days to make sure Jesus body was not taken and the people say He had been raised from the dead. They wanted to make sure he remained dead and buried.

He was crucified, which was one of the most cruel, effective, horrible methods of execution. The body of Christ was buried in a solid rock tomb; Christ body was wrapped with more than 100 pounds of spices according to Jewish burial customs; the stone in front of the tomb entrance weighed two tons. It would have taken several men to move it, yet the stone had been moved away three days later. The guard says his body was taken while they were sleeping. The grave clothes had not been folded or touched. By that time, the clothing would have been hardened like a cocoon, and the body of Jesus was gone. How could this happen outside of the power and plan God?

In 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, we read Jesus’ appearances were confirmed by eyewitnesses. Paul says there were other witnesses — if you don’t believe me ask them. When the disciples proclaimed the Resurrection, they actually were eyewitnesses. They told many who were there what they had seen. In 56 AD Paul wrote that more than 500 people saw the risen Lord Jesus and most were alive at that time. Why would Paul write this if it were not true? If Jesus had not risen from the dead what would Paul gain from writing these words? It would only cause him more trouble with the Jewish and Roman leaders. Why would the Apostles be willing to sacrifice their lives, living a life of rejection, persecution, abuse, and die a terrible death for a lie? If they had taken the body of Jesus or had not actually seen Jesus after His death why would they lay down their lives for a lie? and if the Jews or Romans had taken Jesus body, why did they not prove it by showing the people his dead body?

The truth is Jesus was crucified, buried, and rose again the third according to the Scriptures. He is the Messiah, the Promised one, The Lamb of God who laid down His life for our sins. Through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ we see the character and attributes of our Creator. We see unconditional love, forgiveness, mercy, grace and a total once and for all sacrifice for the sins of his children.
