This plant has long strappy green leaves and brilliant white flowers. It will create a pleasant atmosphere in any room. Many people also think that peace lilies are useful for purifying the air of environmental contaminants. Place peace lilies anywhere that you would like to improve air quality. They are especially useful as office plants. Peace lilies have lily-like white flowers and are associated with prosperity, peace and sympathy. The plants are easily damaged by frost. Grow spathiphyllum wallisii outdoors in zones 11 and 12. In colder regions, bring them indoors before the temperatures reach 40° F.

This attractive plant with feathery fronds has the botanical name chamaedorea elegans. Common names for the plant are parlor palm, dwarf palm, fish tail palm, and good luck palm. The rubber plant – ficus elastica – is a popular ornamental indoor plant. Outdoors, it will grow to over 100 feet tall, but the indoor variety can be kept at a moderate size by keeping it slightly pot bound and with careful pruning..Indirect light is best for plants grown inside. Lucky bamboo likes indirect light and a temperature range of 65–95°F (18–35°C). It will winter outdoors in hardiness zones of 10–11. in colder zones, grow it as a house plant.

Braided money plant – often advertised as a lucky plant

The braided money plant is known as pachira aquatica. The plant is often displayed with braided trunks. This habit is thought to symbolize looking for money and luck! Pachiar aquatica is said top attract wealth and good look. It is also thought of as an air purifier. Braided money tree plant is cold hardy in USDA zones 10 and 11. In colder regions, you should only grow this plant indoors, since it will not take a frost or freeze.

Arrowhead plant

Commonly known as arrowhead plant, or goosefoot, syngonium podophyllum is a feng shui plant. This plant has a distinctive leaf, which changes from the typical arrow shaped form to one with five lobes as it matures. The five lobes represent the five elements: water, fire, earth, wood and metal. This gives it the perfect balance of Yin Yang. The plant is also thought to cleanse the air, as so many lucky plants do. Place arrowhead plant on a desk to bring thoughts of new ideas an to provide inspiration. Arrowhead plant is winter hardy in zones 10 to 12. Elsewhere, it is grown as an indoor plant. The plant prefers bright indirect light.

Shamrock plant – one of the most popular lucky plants

While not an actual member of the shamrock family, oxalis or false shamrock does have the traditional shamrock shaped leaves. All shamrock shaped plants are considered lucky in feng shui. Shamrocks are associated with Ireland. In Irish folklore, the number three is considered very lucky so plants with three leaves are thought to be lucky plants. A common exception which has three leaves is poison ivy!! In this case, it is “leaves of three, let them be!” The three leaves of the shamrock are meant to stand for faith, hope and love. St. Patrick thought the plant symbolized the Holy Trinity. If your plant has a fourth leaf it is considered lucky. The four-leaf clover is an uncommon variation of the regular plant, and is widely considered to be lucky. Oxalis is one of the lucky plants that will grow outdoors in some cooler locations. It is cold hardy in zones 6 and above. I grow oxalis plants indoors around the time of St. Patrick’s day but also have many growing outdoors in semi shady locations in my garden.

It is thought to bring wealth and good fortune to owners. People often give it as a housewarming gift for this reason. One tricky part of growing a jade plant indoors is that they really do like a lot of sunlight. Give them the sunniest window you can. Jade plant is cold hardy in USDA zones 10 and 11. It will only take long temperatures of 30 – 50° F in the winter months. For colder hardiness zones, treat jade plant as an indoor plant and bring it indoors when the temperatures start to fall.

Aloe vera

Aloe barbadensis miller is a plant that has a healing gel inside its thick leaves. It is no wonder that the plant is thought to be lucky! The aloe vera plant brings good luck and positive energy to your home. It is believed that the energy it releases can fight off bad vibes and bad fortune. It is very easy to grow and has countless medical properties. I always have a plant of it growing so that I can use the gel on sunburns, scrapes and cuts. Aloe vera plants help to keep the air clean, and should be grown in a North or East direction for best feng shui. Aloe vera is only hardy in USDA zones 9 – 11. Those in colder climates can still grow it as a houseplant. Bring it outdoors in the summer months for best results. The botanical name for this plant is ficus religiosa. It is considered a sacred tree in Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism. Grown as a bonsai plant, it is thought to bring good luck and positivity to the home. Ficus religiosa is also known as the Bodhi Tree. Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment under this tree.

The plant likes moist, well draining soil and full sun.

Peepal bonsai is only winter hardy in USDA zones 10-12. Other zones can enjoy ficus religiosa as a houseplant.

Varieties of cacti

The Aztec people of Mexico during the Mesoamerican culture regarded cacti in bloom as being very lucky. Getting one to flower as an indoor plant requires good watering habits and the right light conditions. The cold hardiness of cacti depends on the variety. Pitcher plant

The pitcher plant has the botanical name nepenthe. It is also known as monkey cups. The flowers of this plant look somewhat like money bags, and for this reason the plant is considered lucky. Nepenthe is very popular during the Lunar New Year celebrations. Most varieties of pitcher plants are hardy in USDA zones 6-8. ome survive in colder locations as long as they are protected by a thick layer of mulch in the winter. If you have a water garden, pitcher plant makes a nice addition to it. Because of the pendulous nature of the flowers, pitcher plant makes a great hanging basket plant.

Fatsia japonica

It is common to find fatsia japonica in Japanese homes. They consider this a lucky plant because it always has an odd number of leaves, normally 7 or 9. In Japan, odd numbers are considered lucky. Other names for fatsia japonica are glossy-leaf paper plant, paper plant, false castor oil plant, fatsi and Japanese aralia.

This plant likes well draining soil and can tolerate low light conditions.

Fatsia japonica can take a bit more cold than some other lucky plants. It is cold hardy in USDA zones 7b to 10b. For colder locations, it makes an easy to care for houseplant.

Golden Pothos

According to feng shui, the heart-shaped glossy leaves of golden pothos attract wealth and brings luck and happiness. Epipremnum aureum is also known as golden pothos, devil’s ivy and money plant. This lovely plant is thought to bring wealth, prosperity, good health and good fortune to your home or office. The plants are also believed to maintain purity in the air. Place golden pothos in a southeast area of your home. Scientists say that keeping a plant near a computer, TV or WiFi router will absorb radiation that they emit. Give money plant bright, indirect light and be careful of too much sunlight. Golden pothos is a subtropical species. It is only cold hardy in zones 10 and above. Fortunately for those in colder zones, the plants is easy to grow indoors.

Hawaiian Ti plant

The botanical name for this plants is cordyline terminalis or cordyline fruticosa. It is also known as baby doll ti, good luck plant and ti leaf. The plant is highly sought after because of its striking foliage with hues of red, yellow, green and blue. Hawaiian ti is believed by Hawaiians to possess mystical powers. It is planted to bring long life, lasting love and good luck to the owmers. It is often sold as a plant starter log. The plant grows right out of a log. (See other log planters here.) In Hawaii, today, many yards are hedged with Hawaiian Ti for good luck. Hawaiian Ti is cold hardy in zones 10 – 12. For colder zones, it makes a nice house plant.

Lucky plants to grow outdoors

The plants that we have been talking about in this post are all considered indoor plants in most hardiness zones. There are some outdoor plants that are grown in colder climates that are also considered lucky plants to have in the home. Even some common herbs are considered lucky!

Here are a few of them:

Bamboo – it is also beautiful and makes a good privacy wall.

Peonies – a good luck plant with magnificent flowers.

White narcissus – narcissus papyraceus is very easy to force indoors.

Sage – salvia officinalis – a herb plant that is often burned to cleanse your home of bad energy. Basil – a herb that is considered by many to attract good luck.

Chrysanthemums – gold mums are thought to represent wealth and prosperity.
