According to Forbes business, only eight percent of the world’s population manage to turn their dreams into reality. These statistics are repeatedly quoted on many sites such as inc.com, lifehack.org and many others. But is this really true?

If the statistics from the University of Scranton are really to be believed, and allegedly both Harvard and Yale’s research from way back into 1953, it means a whopping 92% of the 7.8 billion on this planet die with their dreams still in them. Over seven billion people have led lives of quiet desperation. Certainly, the alleged statistics from Harvard and Yale were debunked, but then if you do further research you find statistics of only two to six percent according to other companies of the world’s population ever achieve their life goals. Recently I was privileged to speak at event sponsored by GTex on this exact topic. The topic was "How to become one of the so called “eight percent” who achieve their goals." The talk was based on my own experience with Dreams into Reality thinking and how I’d achieved everything I’d ever wanted in my life using the same techniques and tools I coach others with and that many others before me have used to turn their own dreams into reality. Here is a summary of the talk which I hope readers will find useful.

1. Have goals (lots of goals)

2. Categorise your goals into sections such as Finance, Physical, Mental/Intellectual, Emotional, Spiritual, Relationship, Hobbies

3. Prioritise each goal in each category

4. Put a date on when you wish to complete each of the number one priority goals 5. Take each number one priority goal and break it down into mini goals

6. Take each mini goal and break it down into micro goals

7. If the micro goals are still too big, break them down further 8. Create a weekly time sheet and ensure you do at least one micro goal every day 10. Now you have a draft plan – a roadmap of what you will be doing every day to achieve your priority goal. Your draft should also help you understand the reality of the traditional S.M.A.R.T goal acronym. Goals should be

Specific (ie they have an end date, quantity, and description),

Measurable (via your time sheet and by being broken down into micro goals), Achievable (because your overall goal has now been broken or chunked down into micro achievable goals). Realistic (realistic will be dependent on step 11 and your readjusted time-sheet). Many people fail to transform their dreams into reality due to the unrealistic timescales they force on themselves. These unrealistic time-scales eventually causes people to feel despondent and forces them to abandon their dreams. Timely (this is your end goal). Now it might be that using the time sheet, you will realise you cannot achieve a goal in the time frame you had originally anticipated. If you find you will not be able to achieve the goal within a specific time frame, it will be time for you to use out-of-the box thinking to accelerate the time frame of the goal. Having a team will also help with the achievement of the goal within a specific time frame.

11. Take inventory of the following

Your emotional biases – use multiple online personality tests for this

Your skill sets – write down your achievements and failures to get an indication of what your skill sets are Your resources – finances, time, any products or services you will need to reach your goal Your relationships – people who have the skills that will help you achieve your goals, people who will support you, people who will encourage you when you are down 12. Use the inventory taken in step 11, to work out a personal and goal SWOT (strengths weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis.

13. Use the SWOT analysis and personality tests to identify self-sabotage points.

For example, if you suffer from “shiny penny syndrome” you will never be focused on what goal to turn it into a reality. So you would either fix that "lack of focus" weakness or outsource it, such as have an accountability partner to keep you focused, or make a focused person your managing director.

14. Develop the attitudes of:-

Patience – be a tortoise rather than a hare. Providing you are consistently doing the right things success will come. Stick to the plan you made. See my video on the bamboo tree story to understand how patience is so important Persistence – things will go wrong and you will have setbacks. Persistence is universe’s way of finding out how much you really want your dream life. Passion – without passion, you will never be motivated so ensure achieving your goal is something that you are passionate about or ensure that your goal enables something you are passionate about.

15. People Personality

To be in the top 8% of people who achieve their goals you must be good at connecting with and adding value to others – my viral TEDx talk on social magnetism shares the essentials of how to connect with others. Essentially looking at the realities of the text “Love others as you would love yourself.” To achieve any dream dear to your heart, you have to work with others. If you don't value yourself, it is difficult to truly work and add value to others. Valuing yourself often comes from gratefulness. Gratefulness for the people you have in your life and for aspects of your life that you have. A deep love of others normally comes from a deep love of oneself. When people truly feel you care about them and that you want to help them achieve their goals, they will in turn help you achieve your goals. An example of a goal which involved working with others was a goal where I wanted to perform in a large dance congress shown in this article's photograph.

The people I needed connect with, add value to, and support were

my physio (as I had major back problems and could hardly walk),

my dance teachers to push me and correct everything I was doing wrong, my team-mates to support and help them become the best they could be and accept their feedback and correction when I was moving incorrectly. Finally to develop a great people connection, run away and avoid people who are abusive, suck your finances, time, energy and resources without putting anything back. Some are easy to identify by how you feel after being with them or by their constant "me me me" attitudes and social media. Others are harder to detect, sow seeds of doubt in your mind or the minds of the people around you whilst pretending to be your friend, prey on your ego whilst sabotaging you behind your back - see the Risk and Due Diligence steps later in this article. By moving away from these toxic people, you in turn will become less toxic yourself (if we are to believe that we eventually become like the people we associate with), add more value to others and have more energy to focus on your own dreams.

16. Develop a Team

Building on people personality and your SWOT analysis. Having a team that has your back and can do the things you can’t do or the things that you are inefficient at doing, will massively help you achieve your goals. An example is the previously mentioned team to help me achieve my dance goal. Your team members can be virtual, contractors, suppliers, part of your business or a mix. The people in your team must have similar core values and be as passionate as you or else they will not care or be motivated. For example, in one of my property businesses, I am blessed to have amazing business partners who deal with the systems, administration, finding great deals and many many other aspects of the business which I would be unable to do as quickly or efficiently without them. In another property business, the builder is constantly going beyond what has been asked of him and is even passionate about the right tenants living in the accommodation. Having a good team is essential and will protect you against un-necessary stress, help you go far in achieving your dreams, and potentially reduce the timescale it will take you to reach your goal. See my article in the NGO whisperer about teams, how to recruit and build teams.

At the heart of every person who has managed to turn their dreams into reality is supportive win-win communication. Most people think they have excellent communication and it is the other person who has messed up - however this is completely wrong. Communication is two way. If the other person did not understand you the first time or misunderstood your communication, then you cannot blame them. Great communication involves, active listening, confirming and an opportunity for open dialogue. An example of this type of communication, is sharing your goal with others, asking them to clarify if there is anything they have not understood, confirming in writing, what has been discussed and providing an opportunity to give feedback should you or they have misunderstood the communication. An example of terrible, okay, good, better, and excellent communication is as follows:-

Terrible - Let's meet next week

Okay - Let's meet next Tuesday

Good - Let's meet next Tuesday at 10:00am

Better - Let's meet next Tuesday at 10:00am in the Wild Bean Cafe Excellent - Let's meet next Tuesday at 10:00am in the Wild Bean Cafe next to the entrance. I will be wearing a red coat. Let's exchange numbers just in case things go wrong with our plans. Here's the agenda. You can see the last communication has removed all doubt, dealt with any potential problems that could go wrong, and reduced the backward and forward texting that occurs when people try to organise a meeting.

18. Build Risk management into your plan.

Remember the SWOT analysis? Get a reality check on how likely the threats to your dream goal are likely to happen. If the threat is very unlikely don’t worry too much, but if the risk incident is high, have a backup plan. I wanted to hit seven figures by mid-thirties and created five passive income streams to make it happen – two of them failed but the other three carried on to help me achieve my financial goal.

19. Due Diligence

In my early days I did not do sufficient due diligence, on the personality types of the people I was working with, building companies with or investing with. These people set me back, with one putting me into almost a million in debt. Dig deep and see how potential partners or employees work and look at how they treat others. There are so many scam artists who work inside companies or even as business coaches. One scam artist I know has most of the bad reviews and court cases about him hidden by his knowledge of how people, sites and google works. The only way to defend against these people is to due diligence by watching how they work with and treat other people, rather than to listen to the success stories broadcast in their social media and the social media of people caught in their web.

20. Finally Review and Recalibrate

See what’s going wrong, learn from disasters and readjust your roadmap. As Captain Cold, an frenemy of The DC comics super hero The Flash used to say "Make the plan. Execute the plan. Expect the plan to go off the rails. Throw away the plan."

this quote is the same as the proverb.

"The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry."

In other words, once you've created your roadmap, accept that it is at best a framework for you to achieve your dream life. When you create your roadmap to turn your dream into a reality, curveballs will often come into your life, that may take you off course. These curveballs could be a sudden family bereavement or illness, a change in government, a change in the laws, a betrayal, mis-calibration of the risk. Simply re-adjust your roadmap, and build a new plan based on the framework you;ve now created. Please do share and comment on this article if you found it useful and add any other aspect you feel I may have omitted.
