Read More »JERUSALEM (AP) _ Near the site where the Dead Sea scrolls were found, archaeologists have dug up a 2,000-year-old flask filled with an oil that might have been used to anoint the ancient Israelite kings. Joseph Patrich of Hebrew University unveiled the flask Wednesday and said the oil, which has a honey-like consistency, may be the only surviving sample of the balsam oil used as an aromatic body cream or perfume. ″After conducting extensive laboratory analysis and checking literary sources, there is a good possibility that what we have here is the fragrant balsam oil that was famous throughout the Roman Empire,″ he said. The oil matches a discription of a perfume mentioned by the Roman historian Pliny. Known as persimmon oil, it was distilled from a bush-like plant now believed to be extinct. The ancient perfume was very expensive - a sort of Chanel No. 5 of its day - and was coveted throughout the Roman Empire. The persimmon plant, which was different from the modern tree of the same name, grew only in the Dead Sea oasis of En Gedi and around Jericho. The ancient Israelites guarded the secret formula for making the oil, going so far as to post warnings against anyone revealing the process. When the Roman legions approached, the Israelites tried to destroy the orchard of plants. Pliny’s writings indicate the Romans took over production, archaeologists say. Hebrew University chemist Zeev Aizenshtat, who spent three months analyzing the substance, said whatever fragrance the oil had evaporated in the desert cave, where summer temperatures hover over 104 degrees. He said he was unable to make an absolute identification because there were no surviving samples of the ancient plant to make a comparison. ″This oil is very different from other ancient oils in that it did not deteriorate,″ Aizenshtat said. ″This may be the oldest oil that contains such organic matter and whose properties have not been greatly altered by chemical reactions over time.″ The clay juglet stands 5 inches high and contains about 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 ounces of the reddish oil, which is well-preserved and dates to the 1st century B.C. It was wrapped in palm leaves and carefully concealed.

Learn More »It was found last year by the expedition, which includes an American team of volunteers from the Institute of Judaic-Christian Research in Arlington, Texas. The scrolls, ancient holy writings including the Book of Isaiah, were hidden by the Essene Sect in the 1st century A.D. to avoid plundering by the advancing Romans. The expedition will resume digging soon as part of a 6-year-old project to explore the thousands of caves in Qumran overlooking the Dead Sea. Menachem Boorstein, a scholar at the Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva in Jerusalem, said the oil was one of 11 holy fragrances burned as incense on the altar of ancient Jewish Temple. It is mentioned in Exodus and in the collection of Jewish law and commentary called the Talmud. Boorstein said the Talmud describes the oil as highly inflammable and tells the story of a woman killing her daughter by convincing her she should light a candle after rubbing her body with the oil to make its perfume effect stronger. The balsam oil, described by some ancient rabbis as more valuable than gold, was used to annoint the kings of Israel after King Solomon in the 10th Century B.C.E. ″During the ceremony, it would be poured across the king’s head in the form of an X,″ Boorstein said.
