Life after death – Heaven, Hell and Purgatory

Traditionally, Christians believed that Heaven and Hell were physical places. Nowadays, some Christians believe that Heaven and Hell are not physical places but instead could be states of mind – for example, Heaven might be a state of unending happiness. Differences in belief about Heaven and Hell are often due to different interpretations of the Bible. While some Christians understand the words of scripture literally , others interpret them as metaphors or as symbols or myths. Heaven When Jesus spoke to his apostles just before his arrest and crucifixion , he assured them that life after death exists. He described going up to Heaven as going to his Father’s house. This has led many Christians to believe that Heaven is a physical place. Jesus said my Father’s house has many rooms (John 14:2) and explained to the apostles how to get there: quote Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ John 14:6 Christians believe that, in this quote, Jesus was talking about Heaven as eternal life in the presence of God. Hell In contrast to Heaven, the Bible depicts Hell as a place of suffering and pain where souls will be separated from the presence of God. Jesus taught that Hell is a place to be greatly feared: It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell (Matthew 5:29) In the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31), Jesus explains how a rich man ignored the suffering of Lazarus - a poor beggar. When both men died, Lazarus went to Heaven and the rich man went to Hell. In Hell, the rich man begged for mercy. His request was refused. He asked for a messenger to warn his family so that they could avoid going to Hell. This request was also refused. A prophet explained to Lazarus that God’s law, which teaches how to get to Heaven, was already available to everyone in the scriptures. This story tells Christians that punishment in Hell lasts forever and that there are no second chances. People who ignore the suffering of others in life must go to Hell. curriculum-key-fact Some Christians have rejected the idea of Hell as a physical place. They consider that in the past this idea was used to frighten people to make them obey the rules of the Church. Many Christians also argue that the existence of Hell goes against God’s omnibenevolent nature. These Christians do not think that God would punish people for eternity . Instead, they believe that people will have the opportunity to atone for their sin. Some Christians believe that everyone in Hell will eventually repent , be forgiven and reach Heaven.

Who is the leader of angels in heaven?

Michael the Archangel Michael the Archangel, in the Bible and in the Qurʾān (as Mīkāl), one of the archangels. He is repeatedly depicted as the “great captain,” the leader of the heavenly hosts, and the warrior helping the children of Israel.

Michael, Hebrew Mikhaʾel, Arabic Mīkāl or Mīkhāʾīl, also called St. Michael the Archangel, in the Bible and in the Qurʾān (as Mīkāl), one of the archangels. He is repeatedly depicted as the “great captain,” the leader of the heavenly hosts, and the warrior helping the children of Israel. Early in the history of the Christian church he came to be regarded as the helper of the church’s armies against the heathen and against the attacks of the Devil. He holds the secret of the mighty “word” by the utterance of which God created heaven and earth and was “the angel who spoke [to Moses] at Mount Sinai” (Acts 7:38). The numerous representations of Michael in art reflect his character as a warrior: he is shown with a sword, in combat with or triumph over a dragon, from the story in the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse). The feast of St. Michael, which originated in Phrygia, is kept on September 29 in the West, where it is also known as Michaelmas. Most Eastern Orthodox churches commemorate St. Michael and the other angels on November 8, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church honours him on the 12th of each month. In the Roman Catholic Church the feast of the Appearing (or Apparition) of St. Michael the Archangel is kept on May 8. According to legend, this appearance took place on Mount Gargano, in Apulia, about 492, and the mountain became an important medieval pilgrimage site. A formal prayer to St. Michael originated with Pope Leo XIII in 1886.
