Smartest Countries

There are many ways to determine how smart a country’s population is, whether it be from their IQ scores or from their reading and writing ability comprehension. The IQ of a person refers to their intelligence quotient which measures their critical thinking ability. Generally, when discussing matters of intellect a measure using IQ is favored, although it is lacking in key areas (such as comprehension) and is therefore not entirely accurate. The smartest countries are largely those that have invested heavily in education or have a high standard that is maintained constantly. Countries where education is a priority and where a culture of studying and self-improvement is permeated also tend to do well on such lists. As such, the top 5 smartest countries in the world can all be found in Asia, where education and learning are prioritized from an early age. # Country Highest IQ Literacy Rate Number of Nobel Prizes Education Attainment 1 Japan 106.48 29 2 Taiwan 106.47 4 3 Singapore 105.89 97% 74.5% 4 Hong Kong 105.37 1 5 People's Republic of China 104.1 97% 8 6 South Korea 102.35 7 Belarus 101.6 2 8 Finland 101.2 5 9 Liechtenstein 101.07 10 Germany 100.74 111 11 Netherlands 100.74 22 73% 12 Estonia 100.72 85.8% 13 Luxembourg 99.87 2 14 Macau 99.82 15 Cambodia 99.75 16 Canada 99.52 28 17 Australia 99.24 12 80.1% 18 Hungary 99.24 13 80% 19 Switzerland 99.24 27 20 United Kingdom 99.12 137 79.9% 21 North Korea 98.82 22 Slovenia 98.6 1 23 New Zealand 98.57 3 75.1% 24 Austria 98.38 22 25 Iceland 98.26 1 74.1% 26 Denmark 97.83 13 79.3% 27 Belgium 97.49 11 28 United States of America 97.43 400 90.9% 29 Norway 97.13 13 30 Sweden 97 32 31 France 96.69 71 32 Poland 96.35 19 87.8% 33 Slovakia 96.32 34 Russia 96.29 100% 35 Lithuania 95.89 3 89.9% 36 Croatia 95.75 2 37 Andorra 95.2 38 Ireland 95.13 11 39 Czech Republic 94.92 6 40 Latvia 94.79 100% 1 41 Italy 94.23 99% 21 52.5% 42 New Caledonia 93.92 43 Vanuatu 93.92 88% 44 Spain 93.9 98% 8 53.3% 45 Bermuda 93.48 46 Cyprus 93.39 1 74.5% 47 Portugal 92.77 96% 2 43.5% 48 Israel 92.43 13 49 Barbados 91.6 50 Malta 91.27 95% 48.3% 51 Myanmar 91.18 1 52 Mongolia 91.03 45% 53 Bulgaria 90.99 1 77.8% 54 Greece 90.77 98% 2 65.3% 55 Suriname 90.29 94% 56 Ukraine 90.07 6 57 Moldova 89.98 58 Serbia 89.6 59 Vietnam 89.53 1 60 Iraq 89.28 1 61 Uzbekistan 89.01 100% 62 Kazakhstan 88.89 100% 63 Thailand 88.87 94% 64 Armenia 88.82 89.9% 65 Bosnia and Herzegovina 88.54 2 69.1% 66 Costa Rica 88.34 98% 1 40.9% 67 Bhutan 87.94 68 Chile 87.89 2 69 Mexico 87.73 95% 3 38.6% 70 Tajikistan 87.71 71 Uruguay 87.59 99% 72 Brunei 87.58 97% 73 Malaysia 87.58 95% 74 The Bahamas 86.99 75 Romania 86.88 99% 5 76 Turkey 86.8 2 77 Argentina 86.63 99% 5 78 Sri Lanka 86.62 92% 64.8% 79 Mauritius 86.56 80 Turkmenistan 85.86 81 Montenegro 85.78 99% 82 Trinidad and Tobago 85.63 1 83 Azerbaijan 84.81 1 84 Georgia 84.5 85 Turks and Caicos Islands 84.29 86 Paraguay 84.04 94% 42.4% 87 Federated States of Micronesia 83.96 88 Fiji 83.96 89 Marshall Islands 83.96 90 Solomon Islands 83.96 91 Cuba 83.9 92 Bahrain 83.6 68.7% 93 Brazil 83.38 93% 1 94 Guyana 83.23 95 Colombia 83.13 95% 2 53.2% 96 Venezuela 82.99 1 97 Cayman Islands 82.24 98 Afghanistan 82.12 99 Haiti 82.1 100 Dominican Republic 82.05 101 United Arab Emirates 82.05 102 Puerto Rico 81.99 103 Republic of Macedonia 81.91 68.3% 104 Albania 81.75 98% 105 Lebanon 81.7 95% 106 Philippines 81.64 1 107 Peru 81.44 94% 1 108 Northern Mariana Islands 81.36 109 Laos 80.99 110 Libya 80.92 111 Qatar 80.78 112 Jordan 80.7 98% 50.2% 113 Maldives 80.54 114 Iran 80.01 1 115 Pakistan 80 57% 2 116 Grenada 79.34 117 Tunisia 79.22 1 118 Kyrgyzstan 79.09 100% 119 Panama 79 95% 120 Chad 78.87 121 Sudan 78.87 61% 122 Seychelles 78.76 96% 123 Oman 78.7 96% 62.2% 124 Kuwait 78.64 96% 125 East Timor 78.49 68% 126 Indonesia 78.49 96% 38.1% 127 Papua New Guinea 78.49 128 Ecuador 78.26 43.4% 129 Palestine 77.69 97% 1 45.9% 130 Senegal 77.37 131 Comoros 77.07 59% 132 Madagascar 76.79 77% 133 British Virgin Islands 76.69 134 Bolivia 76.53 59.2% 135 Uganda 76.42 77% 136 Saudi Arabia 76.36 62.3% 137 Egypt 76.32 4 138 India 76.24 74% 12 139 Algeria 76 81% 2 140 Kenya 75.2 82% 1 141 Angola 75.1 142 Jamaica 75.08 143 Tanzania 74.95 1 144 Syria 74.41 145 Bangladesh 74.33 74% 2 36.8% 146 Zimbabwe 74.01 147 Burkina Faso 73.8 39% 148 Saint Lucia 73.68 2 149 Mozambique 72.5 150 Burundi 72.09 151 Niger 70.82 35% 152 Antigua and Barbuda 70.48 153 Rwanda 69.95 73% 154 Benin 69.71 42% 155 Malawi 69.7 156 El Salvador 69.63 89% 33.6% 157 Botswana 69.45 158 Lesotho 68.87 159 South Africa 68.87 11 160 Eswatini 68.87 88% 161 Eritrea 68.77 77% 162 Saint Helena 68.74 163 Zambia 68.43 87% 164 Ethiopia 68.42 1 165 Djibouti 68.41 166 Cameroon 67.76 77% 167 Nigeria 67.76 62% 1 168 Somalia 67.67 169 Morocco 67.03 74% 1 170 Namibia 66.19 92% 171 Dominica 66.03 172 São Tomé and Príncipe 65.22 93% 173 Democratic Republic of the Congo 64.92 174 Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 63.42 175 Gabon 62.97 85% 176 Republic of the Congo 62.97 80% 177 Yemen 62.86 1 178 Belize 62.55 43.3% 179 Central African Republic 62.55 37% 180 Honduras 62.16 87% 181 Togo 59.83 182 Mali 59.76 35% 5.4% 183 Mauritania 59.76 184 South Sudan 58.61 35% 185 Ghana 58.16 79% 1 186 Ivory Coast 58.16 187 Guinea 53.48 40% 188 Nicaragua 52.69 189 The Gambia 52.68 190 Guatemala 47.72 81% 2 191 Liberia 45.07 2 192 Sierra Leone 45.07 43% 193 Nepal 42.99 68%

The Intelligent Quotient, or IQ, is a type of standard score that is calculated by a set of standardized tests designed to assess human intelligence. It generally ranges from 0 to 200, and 100 is considered to be the means. The higher an individual’s IQ is (or higher than 100), the more intelligent they are considered to be. Because IQ is a score that estimates – and not precisely measures – a certain form of intelligence, some argue that it is flawed and that it does not account for factors such as social skills, motivation, emotion, creativity, or morality. The average IQ is measured in almost every country in the world, which makes it a useful tool to compare a country’s population intelligence to another. But more than just assessing a population’s intelligence, the average IQ also plays a role in understanding the overall well-being of a nation. IQ scores are associated with a variety of factors including nutrition, morbidity, mortality, and the environment. But more broadly, the average IQ is also correlated to socioeconomic factors such as school and job performances, income, crime, health, etc. Therefore, when comparing two countries’ average IQ, you not only compare their population’s intelligence, but also these countries’ education, health, social, political, and economic systems. This way, the average IQ of a nation gives a general idea of where cognitive abilities are the most developed, but also where social and economic wealth is.

Smartest Countries

Based on IQ estimates, Japan, ranked as the smartest country in the world, Taiwan, the second smartest, Singapore, the third, Hong Kong, ranked fourth, and China, the fifth, are considered to be the smartest countries in the world. Situated in East Asia, these four wealthy nations have prominent urban centers where the majority of the population lives and a strong market economy. But this is not their sole characteristic. In fact, these five nations are the smartest countries in the world because they have abundantly invested in education. They built robust basic education systems and higher education programs, they created effective early reading programs and other skills programs. The following smartest countries are South Korea, ranked sixth, Belarus, ranked seventh, Finland, ranked eighth, Liechtenstein, ranked ninth, and Germany, which is the tenth smartest country in the world. These nations are also renowned for their exceptional educational systems and have high literacy and comprehension levels, Belarus for example has a literacy rate of 99.7%.

Smartest Country in the World

With a national IQ score of 106.48, Japan is the smartest country in the world, and it is for many reasons. First, Japan is a world-leading country and the third-largest economy. It is also one of the most densely populated countries in the world and is extremely urbanized. Japan is a global center of innovation and is home to world-known companies in various industries including automobile manufacturing, electronics, and pharmaceuticals. Japan’s health system and overall health, nutrition, and environment have improved in the last decades. The Japanese education system is considered to be one of the best in the world: the government has invested in improving the quality of education from a very young age and adapting to the changing world by focusing on learning, innovation, and digital literacies. Yet, this drive for educational and employment success has some downsides. The strong Japanese culture for self-improvement and overachievement can also lead to isolation, loneliness, and exhaustion, impacting its population’s mental health. Mental health issues and illnesses are stigmatized in Japanese society, and seen as shameful and taboo, which only further aggravates the prevalence of mental diseases in the country.
