Dreaming is weird, don't you think? A lot of us do it, some of us don't do it at all. And some of us have dreams so strange it'd be better off not mentioned to anyone else! Sometimes we have scary dreams too.

Interestingly, there are some scary dreams that many of us in the UK seem to have. But what are these nightmares and what do they tell us?

Let's delve into our common nightmares.

The list of common nightmares

1. Your teeth falling out

The first common nightmare on our list is dreaming about your teeth falling out. Horrible, right?

A study into this common nightmare found that having dreams about teeth has a direct correlation with dental irritation on awakening, rather than psychological distress. This means that if you dream about your teeth falling out, it could be down to dental stress, rather than psychological stressors such as money worries. However, many people believe that having nightmares about your teeth falling out represents change. A new career, a new friendship...this change can be anything. That said, the cause of why we have this unsettling dream is not determined, and so other factors could contribute to this very common nightmare.

2. Being chased

Another common nightmare on our list is being chased. Have you ever had a dream where you're running away from something yet you can't seem to move forward? Well, you're not alone! No matter how terrifying this common nightmare is, the real-life reason behind it is much less scary. If you have a recurring dream where you're being chased, then it means that you're avoiding something in your waking life. It could be procrastinating your revision for an upcoming exam, or you could be avoiding that friend you had a falling out with. Either way, a nightmare about being chased is telling you to get started and face the music.

3. Falling

Another common nightmare many have is that of falling. It could be slipping over a balcony or falling from a great height into a pit of darkness; however you fall, it's never going to be pleasant. But what does falling mean? Well, as with any dream, the reasons will differ depending on the person. The generalised meaning behind falling in a dream is that it is representative of a lack of control. It suggests that you are overwhelmed and don't have any control over a certain situation in your life. It signifies helplessness, and instability. For example, if you trip and fall in your dream it could signify that you lack self-confidence. Taking a look into your personal life and worries may help to resolve your issues. Especially in the dream world.

4. Running late

Maybe you're running late for work, you're late meeting a friend, you're late for a dinner date...no matter what you do you can't seem to get to where you need to on time. Never mind in the dream world; running late for anything in real life is anxiety-inducing for many. This common nightmare is so realistic that it can be even scarier than those that feature terrifying creatures and spooky settings. Having nightmares about running late tells us a lot about our mental state. This common nightmare is an expression of your anxieties in waking life. It could signify that you feel like you have missed out on an opportunity, or that you want to make a change in your life. It could also be a manifestation of your stress regarding a specific event such as a wedding, or a career change.

5. Unable to find a toilet

This common nightmare is a little strange, but we can understand why it's considered a nightmare. Have you ever needed the loo and you can't find a bathroom anywhere? The more you need it the more you panic, it's a vicious circle.

But what does this common nightmare mean to us?

Apparently, being unable to find a toilet in your dream means that you are plagued by major frustrations and fears. Having an accident is surely up there with one of the most embarrassing things, and this dream could represent having your vulnerabilities in the open.

To understand what might have caused this common nightmare, you'd need to look deep into your personal self, has anything happened recently that you can link to the dream?

Put it this way, at least it was a dream and not real-life!

Have you experienced one of these common nightmares?

It's important to remember that everyone is different, and the generalised reasons for having these common nightmares might not apply to everyone. However, isn't it interesting to think about how much our personal lives affect our dreams so much? Something so little can trigger dreams so big!

Have you dreamt of any of these things? If so, did you find out the reason behind it?
