According to a study published last week in the Psychology of Popular Media and Culture, 1 in 8 teenage girls is a compulsive texter. What does this mean exactly? Well, for one thing, teens are spending too much time on their phones, but also like with other compulsive behaviors, such as gambling, this addiction can have very negative consequences on your life. Compulsive texting is like any other addiction and symptoms include feeling the need to interact constantly with your phone, skipping schoolwork and chores in favor of texting, and losing sleep over these digital messages. While texting is generally good because it’s a form of communication that can help build relationships, it becomes a problematic when it interrupts other aspects of your life. The study compared compulsive texting to gambling addiction specifically, because certain symptoms, like lying about the number of texts sent per day and having trouble limiting texting, are similar. However, while gamblers lose thousands of dollars to their addiction, what's at stake for a compulsive teen texter? Grades, for one thing. The study found that compulsive texters have overall lower grades than their peers, confirming previous studies that found that college students who texted while doing homework have lower grades than students who abstained. Time spent on Facebook also negatively correlates to academic performance, according to The New York Times. While girls do better in school than boys overall, the girls who are compulsive texters have lower grades in comparison to the girls who were not. Additionally, teens who send and receive texts late at night may develop trouble sleeping, because the harsh light from electronics can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm. Others use texting to procrastinate early in the evening, and end up finishing homework late at night, causing them to lose sleep. When teens lose sleep, their grades suffer even more, causing a vicious cycle. “Compulsivity is more than just the number of texts teens are engaging in,” Kelly M. Lister-Landman, the lead researcher on the study, tells The New York Times. “What is their relationship with phone use? Do they feel anxious when it’s not around them? When they sit down to eat dinner with their family, do they feel a need to check it? Do they feel compelled to look at it at all times, rather than just answering texts they get?” Dr. Lister-Landman theorizes that because girls are more prone to compulsive texting than boys, and their texts tend to be more emotional, their anxiety about texting increases. Think of it as classic FOMO: some teens develop a real fear that if they’re not attached to their phone at all times, they’ll miss an important text, or fall out of the loop with their social circle. Apparently, the latter is a huge issue, because for some, texting comprises most of their social life. The study states that only 35% of teens reported socializing face-to-face outside of school, and 63% text on a daily basis, meaning more teens are texting than engaging with their peers in person. Again, texting is a great way to communicate, because you can always be in touch with your friends, but it should supplement your social life, not replace it. Instead of having full conversations over text, try to use it to just make plans offline. Because no matter how many heart-eyed kissy-faced emojis you add to the end of a sentence, they can’t replace a real hug from your best friend.
