After Pharaoh had ordered all the first-born male babies to be killed, one woman, Jochebed, looked desperately for a way to save her new-born son. She hid him in a basket made of reeds and left him on the river bed, knowing that the Pharaoh's daughter came to bathe there. Sure enough, Pharaoh's daughter discovered the baby floating in the river. She took pity on the baby, whom she guessed was an Israelite - she knew the baby would certainly be killed if he was discovered. As she had no children of her own, she decided to bring the baby up herself. She called him Moses. She came across Moses's sister Miriam on the riverbank and asked her to find a nurse. The nurse she found was Moses's mother. So, Moses was brought up and educated as an Egyptian and had a comfortable life growing up in the Pharaoh's palace.

The Burning Bush

As he grew up, Moses was disturbed by the way his people, the Israelites, were treated. One day, he killed an Egyptian in anger at his mistreatment of an Israelite slave, so he fled into the desert, where he led a new life as a shepherd. One day Moses came to Mount Sinai with his flock. A winged angel appeared from a burning bush and talked to Moses. Then God spoke to him through the burning bush, but Moses hid his face in terror. God promised that the Israelites would be delivered from Egypt to a lush and fertile homeland. He told Moses that he had been chosen to bring about God's wishes. Moses was reluctant to take on the role, but God promised to support him, and showed him three signs to give him faith.

Moses and his brother Aaron came before the Pharaoh's court to tell him the Lord God of Israel commanded him to let the people of Israel go free. But Pharaoh didn't recognise the Lord God of Israel and he didn't believe the two men. So God sent a sign. He commanded Aaron to throw down his staff, which miraculously changed into a serpent. Then Pharaoh called all his counsellors and magicians, who put down their rods, which also changed into serpents. But Aaron's rod swallowed all of their's.
