It’s September, which means that if you were lucky enough to exist in the Harry Potter universe, you’d be in Hogwarts right now bingeing on chocolate frogs before potions class. THE DREAM. You would also be assigned to a house, which, much like zodiac signs, would tell you pretty much everything you need to know about a person right off the bat (Scorpios and Slytherins tend to invite similar amounts of scorn, sorry, bbs). Well, spoiler alert: The four houses actually correspond reeeaaally well with the four elements in astrology. Not to say that every student in Hufflepuff is super happy to be there or fully agrees with that placement, but think of it like how your Sun sign isn’t always a perfect representation of all your personality traits. All to say, you may very well be a Slytherin Sun *and* a Ravenclaw Rising, and that’s okay! So without further ado, here are the four Hogwarts houses and the zodiac signs they’re most like:

Gryffindor: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius

Okay, Gryffindor is 110 percent the house for fire signs. First off, the mascot is a lion (hey, Leos 👋) and its colors are scarlet and gold. But more important, Gryffindor witches and wizards are known for their determination, bravery, and boldness (which sometimes hinges on being reckless). They’re also athletic and sort of the “jock” clique of Hogwarts. What about that doesn’t SCREAM “fire signs” to you??? Of all the signs in the zodiac, Aries, Leo, and Sag have the most natural talent, even if they take a while to grow into it—take Neville, for example, who goes through the ultimate glow-up in the books (and IRL).

Fire signs also tend to have the best intentions and are willing to forgive and forget, even if they can get over-competitive or hotheaded every now and then. So it makes sense that the Hogwarts house with the most “heroes” in it is associated with fire signs! Harry Potter himself is a fire sign (put your paws up, Leos!) and so are all the Weasley kids, except Ron (he’s an emotional Pisces). Fire signs. Gryffindor. Boom.

This house gets shat on the most not only by the fandom but also even in the books—it’s said that Hufflepuff is where any leftover students who didn’t make the cut for the other three houses go. But the Hufflepuff slander ends today! Hufflepuffs are known for being dedicated and patient hard workers, which are def earth-sign qualities. Just like this house, earth signs get a bad rap for being boring, but they’re just the only ones who know how to mind their own business and stay in their own lane ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Still need proof? Hufflepuff’s dorm is literally underground and right next to the school’s kitchens—earth signs (especially Taurus) are the major foodies of the zodiac. Earth signs are also the ones most associated with nature, and Hufflepuff’s own head of house is the herbology teacher, Professor Sprout—who, BTW, is actually a Taurus in the books. This also falls right in line with my two personal theories that earth signs are the stoners of the zodiac (again, looking at you Taurus) and that Hufflepuff is the house where Hogwarts’ potheads are most likely to end up…think about it. Huff-le-puff, their rooms are right next to the kitchen in case they get the munchies, their leading professor is the herbology teacher….Anyway, the evidence is clear—Hufflepuff is the house for earth signs, periodt.

Ravenclaw: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius

Ravenclaw is *for sure* the house most associated with air signs. Its house mascot is a raven—hello!—and its colors are sky blue and bronze. And then there are the qualities of the house itself: Air signs are known for being über social and intellectual, and Ravenclaw is the house that most values wit, curiosity, and knowledge. Their dorms are high up in a tower and the only way to get in is to be clever and crafty enough to solve a random riddle asked by the door knocker, otherwise you’re locked out. In the books, Ravenclaw students all tend to be well-liked in general, even if they are a little bit eccentric, which is the most Libra quality of all time. And like all air signs, they love learning and keeping their minds sharp at all times.

Slytherin: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces

This house is stereotypically the house where all the villains of the wizarding world originate (sorry, water signs), but IMO, they’re also the most misunderstood, which is also true of water signs (particularly Pisces). So let’s dive right in: Slytherin’s house mascot is a serpent, its colors are green and silver, and its dorms are in the dungeons literally under a lake. Slytherins are cunning, resourceful, and incredibly ambitious, which sounds particularly like traits that Scorpios exhibit. Listen, Scorpios: I know it, you know it, we all know it—just like Slytherin, you get a reputation for being villains, even if it isn’t true. But Slytherins are also known to be deeply loyal to each other before anyone else and share a deep bond with each other almost like family—which is a trademark Cancer trait, BTW. One of the biggest conflicts in the entire Harry Potter series is the feud between Gryffindors and Slytherins, which actually originated centuries before the books take place—yes, centuries. Let me be a geek and explain: Salazar Slytherin, the OG Slytherin, and Godric Gryffindor, both of whom took part in establishing Hogwarts, had a maaajor falling out, and ever since then, the two houses of magical schoolchildren have been locked in a teenage turf war. No shade, but can you name one water sign you know who doesn’t have a problem with holding grudges? I’ll wait. (Please don’t @ me.)
