How long does manna last?

I woke up this morning with this thought: “How long does a word from God sustain me?” I guess the question comes from the fact that I love hearing God, but I don’t like feeling like I ‘have to do something to hear God’… This passage came to mind:

Exodus 16:4

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.” This passage comes from the period of Hebrew history we know as the Exodus. God’s people found themselves without easy access to food in the desert (during the Exodus), God provided food for them each evening and morning (16:8a).

I will rain down bread from heaven for you

God promised to literally rain food on His people everyday! Everyday when the Israelites woke up (for the duration of the 40 years they were in the desert) — they knew that the Lord would have breakfast waiting for them in the form of the manna. Manna was a white substance that started to cover the ground when the dew settled each evening and by morning the desert floor was thick with it. It was white (16:31) and looked like resin (Numbers 11:7). And it tasted glorious — like wafers made with honey (16:31)! Towards of the end of the journey, Moses reminded the people that there was more to this than just food:

Deuteronomy 8:3

He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Other than the literal feeding of the nation, The deeper purpose of the manna was to teach the people that each day each person needed to come to the Lord for nourishment. The same is true for us today — when we wake up we have spiritual nourishment at hand. God will give us the spiritual energy we need each morning through rhema words in our devotional times.

go out each day and gather enough for that day

The thing with the manna was that it only lasted for a day — in fact a bit less.

Exodus 16:21

Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. By lunch time the mann had started to melt away! Manna had a use by date of less than 24 hours (16:9). I’ve found that a feed from the word lasts me about 24 hours. I don’t mean just a superficial read — I mean when I feel the Spirit of God speaking to me through the Word. After about 48 hours, I start to feel depleted and by the third day I’m spiritually famished. (By this I don’t mean a sense of His presence, but rather a deep sense of what I’d describe as a “grounding in my spirit”). When I mean famished I mean that I start to think and operate differently. Although the Presence of God is never far, my attitude and perspective starts to return to what I call default mode. Secondly, it’s vital to see that each individual in the camp needed to collect as much as he / she needed each and every day. The Bible tells us that they were free to eat as much as they wanted, but on average about an omer (2 kgs) was the recommended amount. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much… The rule of the manna was that when they tried to collect more for the next day — the manna went rancid overnight. Except every Saturday night!

16:8a

…he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning…

16:12b

…‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’

Numbers 11:9

When the dew settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down.

16:16b

…Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.

16:9

Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.

16:31

The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.

Numbers 11:7

The manna was like coriander seed and looked like resin.

John 6:58

This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.
