If their current partner found out, they likely wouldn't be pleased, but they wouldn't have anything firm to point out as sketchy. Putting someone on layby is the move of someone who's not particularly happy being single, even briefly. It's a little shady, but it's definitely not uncommon. None of the behaviours listed here are. In a perfect world, we'd all be very direct and honest about our feelings, but that's not where we live.

That said, I'm sure we could all try a little harder.
