While the "fuller lip" look has been trending for a while and plumpers like Too Faced's Lip Injection Extreme have already gone viral on the app, it appears that TikTok has recently found a more natural (and affordable) at-home hack to attain the look: Cinnamon oil. As noted by Dazed, many TikTok users have taken to the app to show how mixing cinnamon oil with their favorite lip glosses (or directly on its own) leaves them with plumper lips. While it's apparent from the videos that this actually does work, Teen Vogue wanted to get more details on how safe the trend was. That's why we reached out to Dr. Dendy Engelman, a board-certified dermatologist and RxSaver medical expert, to get more information on this hack. The good news? Dr. Engelman tells us that cinnamon oil can in fact be a short-term effective way to plump lips, similar to lip-plumping glosses. The not-so-good news? While it is true that you are actively irritating your lips by using cinnamon oil, Dr. Engelman adds that the beauty hack is “largely harmless." However, she still suggests doing a patch test on your arm before going through with it fully. “The reaction, in general, is an irritation to the skin but shouldn't have any damaging effect unless you are allergic to cinnamon, then it can cause allergic contact dermatitis,” she adds. For someone that has a history of allergies or naturally leans towards more sensitive skin, this probably isn’t the beauty hack to jump on. If you’re not into the lip plumping effects but you do enjoy safe DIY and at-home beauty hacks, there are other things that cinnamon oil can be used for. “You can also gargle [cinnamon oil] with some warm water for fresher breath,” Dr. Engelman tells Teen Vogue. Next time you reach for your favorite lip plumping gloss and you notice the tube is a bit low, maybe take a page from TikTok’s hack book and grab your cinnamon oil but remember that this is a temporary fix and the oil won’t leave you with permanently plump lips. Remember to do your patch test if you are going to try this hack out and don't overdo it – beauty might be pain but safety always comes first.
