Even though the Ark is no longer in the picture, and the Sky People have integrated with the rest of humanity, now holding different beliefs and policies to those they held on the Ark, this is still a popular phrase that is used in every season as a sign of recognition and appreciation to those our characters have lost. This would have likely originated due to the Ark’s law that all crime is punishable by death. It’s probable that anyone who grew up in space had been affected by this decree and knew someone who had been sentenced to death. It may also be an ode to the members of the human race who were no longer with them due to the majority of the human race being obliterated by the nuclear apocalypse. Even when our characters have splintered and created a new society, merging with the Grounders, the fact this phrase is still used when someone passes away shows how rooted it is in the character’s lives. Many characters on the show disliked life on the Ark and were imprisoned and manipulated by those in power, however “may we meet again” must still bring them hope and comfort and it’s obvious the meaning is engraved in their minds from when they were children. We’ve even seen Grounders utilize the saying in the form of Lincoln saying goodbye to Octavia, symbolizing his love for her and her people despite being raised in a different society. There are not many communal acts that the Sky People share with each other, especially compared to the Grounders who are a much more cult-like group, so it is emotional and sweet when they come together to make this gesture after death.
