There are plenty of great cars you can own on a $50,000 annual salary. But wouldn’t it be nice if you could afford the same car on a $40,000 salary, or even a $30,000 salary? If you really want to make a car fit into your price range, there’s no better way than to have a healthy credit score. Since a higher credit score translates into a lower risk for finance companies, they’re willing to lower your interest rate to compete for your business. A lower interest rate translates into a lower monthly payment, which in turn means a lower total cost. For this study, GOBankingRates surveyed the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of a variety of 2020 vehicles and used CarMax’s car payment calculator to determine estimated payments for those with very good, good and fair credit. Payments were computed using a 60-month term after a 20% down payment. Vehicles are ranked from lowest MSRP to highest. Here’s the resulting list of cars that appeared as being affordable for those earning $50,000 per year, and how much you’ll pay if you have great credit.

It's All About Your Credit Score

As you can see from the examples above, your credit score plays a big part in whether you can afford a particular car. The higher you can get your credit score, the lower your monthly payment is likely to be. With the right credit score, you can afford more expensive cars even while earning a lower income. In many cases, those with fair credit have to pay 20% or more than those with very good credit for the same car. That extra money goes right into the pocket of your financing company, while you get nothing else to show for it. There’s no better real-world example of why you want to keep your credit score high.

More From GOBankingRates

Jordan Rosenfeld contributed to the reporting for this article.

Methodology: GOBankingRates determined the cars in this study by first compiling a list of 2019 vehicles sourced from U.S. News and World Report’s 2019 Best Cars ranking. The range of monthly car payments was determined based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2017 Consumer Expenditure Survey, which states that Americans have a mean income before taxes of $73,573, and spend $4,054 on vehicle purchases (net outlay) plus $220 on vehicle finance charges. Thus, Americans spend approximately 6% of their annual income on vehicle purchases and finance charges. This served as the low-end of the price range and 10% on the high-end (assuming 50% of income spent on necessities, with housing costing a maximum of 30%, vehicles 10% and 10% for other necessities). Individual vehicle websites were sourced for each vehicle’s starting MSRP, and CarMax’s car payment calculator was used to determine monthly payments with fair credit, good credit and very good credit. The annual salaries analyzed were $80,000, $70,000 and $60,000 before taxes; monthly payments were based on a 20% down payment and 60-month finance terms. Car model prices and monthly payments amounts were updated on Oct. 5, 2020. This article originally appeared on GOBankingRates.com: Great Cars You Can Own on a $50K Salary
