Luck is that element that plays a huge role in the difference between success and failure. I was reading a blog post from Naval Ravikant's last week, after listening to a Joe Rogan's podcast episode featuring him, and found something really interesting I wanna share with you. In one of the episodes, Naval discusses the role of luck in entrepreneurship. He is commenting on a concept borrowed from Marc Andreessen, who in turn borrowed it from a book called Chase, Chance, and Creativity by Dr. James Austin. Crazy how ideas evolve, right? (and now I'm stealing from all of them). In the book, Dr. James Austin describes the four kinds of luck and I will try to explain them in the next paragraphs using excerpts from these three sources.

01 Lucky by fate (Blind luck)

As I could understand, this first kind of luck is completely impersonal and you can't influence it. It is the kind of luck that happens to you in the sense that its occurrence is completely accidental and you do not need to apply any effort.

As Marc Andreessen says:

You just got lucky because something completely out of your control happened. There is nothing you can do to change it.

We call that chance or fate as you probably guessed.

02 Luck from hustling (Motion)

Have you ever heard the phrase "when you don't know what to do, just do something"? The second kind of luck takes that into account because it depends on motion.

As Dr. James Austin states:

This kind of luck favors those who have a persistent curiosity about many things coupled with an energetic willingness to experiment and explore.

In his book he uses the analogy of a researcher or scientist and says that, if the researcher fails after conducting a series of experiments to prove something, we could say that all work applied is wasted motion, right?

But, on the other hand, if the researcher did not move until he was certain of progress or failure, he would accomplish very little in his career. The distinction between success and failure must be made at some point. But it cannot always be made first. And it is not always made consciously. As a researcher, you do not know if you are going to be lucky at the end but, the only thing on your hand is motion. A certain [basic] level of action "stirs up the pot", brings in random ideas that will collide and stick together in fresh combinations.

Different from the first kind of luck this one depends on your ability to keep the energy and the movement perdure. To influence it you can always ask you: How energetic am I?

Naval's line about this kind of luck goes like this:

This is luck that comes through persistence, hard work, motion. Which is when you’re running around creating lots of opportunities, you’re generating a lot of energy, you’re doing a lot of things, lots of things will get stirred up in the dust.

03 Luck from preparation (Personal sensory receptivity)

There are opportunities out there that are only spotted by those who have sufficient background and the ability to observe, remember, and make associations.

As Dr. James Austin says

Chance presents only a faint clue, the potential opportunity exists, but it will be overlooked except by that one person uniquely equipped to observe it, visualize it conceptually, and fully grasp its significance. Chances are that the more curious you are and the more skilled you are in a given field, you will notice when lucky break surfaces in that field. Curious people are more likely to already have in their heads the building blocks for crafting a solution for any particular problem they come across.

04 Luck from your unique character (personal motor behavior)

In this last one, things change a little bit. You don't have to worry about luck cause it will find you. As Naval Ravikant says in his podcast, and I could not find any better way of phrasing: That is the weirdest and hardest kind. Which is where you build a unique character, a unique brand, a unique mindset, where then luck finds you. That kind of luck works in favor of those who build personal lifestyles around topics in which the competition is very low so they got invited to take part in unique opportunities.

As Andrew Marc says:

A lot of people think making money is about luck. It’s not. It’s about becoming the kind of person that makes money. If you’re a trusted, reliable, high-integrity, long-term thinking deal maker, then when other people want to do deals but they don’t know how to do them in a trustworthy manner with strangers, they will literally approach you and give you a cut of the deal or offer you a unique deal just because of the integrity and reputation that you have built up.

How flexible and aggressive are you at synthesizing?

This is the kind of luck that develops when you place action and energy on doing things based on your flavor and hobbies. You build a unique character, a unique brand, a unique mindset, where then luck finds you.
