Wondering if Disney’s Encanto is ok for kids? Rated PG for some thematic elements and peril, Encanto is kid friendly for all ages and families! This bright and colorful Disney film is a wonderful way to welcome us to the holidays. Here’s what parents need to know in this Encanto Parents Guide.

Is Encanto Kid Friendly? Parents Guide

The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. It has been protected by magic for many, many years, but with a price. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift — every child except Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz). However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger and fading quickly.

Parents need to know

What is Encanto Rated?

Encanto is rated PG for some thematic elements and mild peril according to the MPAA which means it may not be suitable for all children. Parents should know that Encanto is pretty tame compared to other animated films, but of course, involves the death of a family member.

Language

There is no profanity in Encanto (yay!), but there is a use of g-d.

Scary Content

Is Encanto too scary for little kids? No, not really; it’s mostly kid friendly for all ages. While there are some scenes that involve fire and death of loved ones, it’s certainly not as emotional as The Lion King or Coco. However, it is a little reminiscent of Frozen with magical elements. Little ones who are sensitive to violence may need to cover their eyes for a minute. There is no major super scary villain, but some children will be empathetic towards Mirabel’s sadness.

Is Encanto Appropriate For Kids Under Age 8?

At first when I saw the previews for Encanto, I didn’t exactly understand what the movie was about. And the storyline may still be confusing to some younger kids, especially about the gifts. However, the movie is so bright and colorful, the songs upbeat and dance-worthy, that 90 minutes seems to fly by! I’d recommend Encanto for kids ages 6 and up, but preschoolers and even toddlers can certainly enjoy the music and adorable characters.

As a Latina mom, the themes of familia, of pressure to fit in to family and expectations, and also to want to help resonated loud and clear. What a beautiful tribute to Colombian culture. The clothing and details in the town and village made me smile. Some kids may recognize Stephanie Beatriz’s voice as Mirabel from In The Heights. She does an excellent job of bringing a sense of compassion and humanity to Mirabel. The songs are catchy and yes, you pick up on that Lin-Manuel Miranda style immediately. I enjoyed the faster beats mixed in with Hamilton-type rapping. Encanto also struck a chord with me, because of this big, wonderful multi-generational family living together under one roof. As I’ve had to live with my parents at times with my own children, the memories made are priceless. Hooray for original material and no live-action remakes. It was a refreshing change. Even though emotional Encanto quotes made me cry, it wasn’t a therapy-like cry as in Coco. And I was thankful for that. Sometimes I want to leave a theater happy and full of joy, and Encanto is that. True joy. Encanto is a family-friendly win this Thanksgiving and you should add it to your holiday movie list!
