WHO IS THE GIRL WITH KRISHNA...?

Mahabharata describes an unknown Gopi who is the favorite of Krishna whom he plays with as a young boy. She is described as special to Krishna. And the unknown Gopi might have been Rukmini who is described as Radha in latest scriptures like Padma Puran, Gita Govinda etc.

Padma Purana (Patala-khanda, Chapter 71)--

Early one morning, in the country atmosphere of Vraja (ninety miles south of present-day Delhi) some fifty centuries ago, Vrishabhanu Maharaja was taking his morning bath in the holy Yamuna River. Just then, a beautiful baby girl floated by, lying on a radiant and fully blossomed lotus. With intense glee, he embraced the divine infant and carried Her off to his queen, Kirtida Devi. When Kirtida saw her husband with this magnificent child, she ran over and showered little Radha with unrelenting affection. But the king and queen quickly noticed that the baby's eyes did not open. This naturally broke their hearts, and they prayed that God might bless Her with the power of sight. Soon, Nanda Maharaja's wife, Yashoda Devi, arrived from Gokula, holding young Sri Krishna in her arms. Vrishabhanu and Kirtida, now the parents of Sri Radha, greeted her with due honor, but Yashoda could not take her eyes off the newborn baby girl resting in Kirtida Devi's arms. Yashoda drew closer with baby Krishna, and as soon as Krishna came face to face with the baby girl, She opened Her eyes for the first time. Appropriately, Her first sight was the moonlike face of Her beloved Sri Krishna, and She paused as She gazed upon His lovely form. Krishna too was overwhelmed with love as He saw before Him His eternal consort, in the guise of a baby. In this way, the scriptures relate how the eternal divine couple go about "meeting" each other as They appear, time and again, in the material world. As They "grow in years," They play with loving friends, swim in the Yamuna, graze their cows, and relish each other's loving embrace. Sacred texts and the realizations of the sages elaborate on the details, establishing narratives that serve as virtual magnets, attracting all who hear them back to the spiritual realm. Radha’s birth is celebrated 15 days after Krishnashtami. It is believed by many that Radha was 10 years older than Krishna. In every incarnation Lakshmi, in word of herself, can be the wife of only Vishnu. So it is absolutely right that God Brahma made Radha and Krishna get married secretly in the forest. It is believed that Radha was Krishna’s first wife and was pointed out Bhandirvana in Vrindavan where Radha and Krishna had a Gandharva wedding in the presence of Lord Brahma himself. According to lore, in their last tryst before he leaves for Mathura, Krishna’s mesmerizing flute that erotically aroused all entities with its enchanting melody is bequeathed to Radha. He never played the flute again nor did he ever come back to Vrindavan.

THE RUKMINIDEVI, BIRTH, MARRIAGE, CHILDREN & DEATH

Rukminidevi was princess of Vidarbha and she is the first and chief consort of Lord Krishna, the prince of Dwaraka. Krishna heroically kidnapped her and eloped with her as they loved each other but her brother Rukmi out of envy had forbid their marriage because Krishna killed his uncle Kamsa who was also a friend of Rukmi. He had arranged an unwanted marriage to Srimati Rukmini devi with evil Shishupala who was also cousin of Krishna because of political reasons(He was King of Chedi Kingdom whereas Sri Krishna was not yet a King). But later Shrimati Rukmini wrote a beautiful love letter to Krishna to come and take her away in Rakshsa style. (described in the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Puran, Harivansha, Mahabharat). According to traditional accounts, princess Rukmini is believed to have been born on Vaishakha 11 (Vaishakh Ekadashi). Although born of an earthly king, her position as an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi is described throughout Puranic literature: A hero among the Kurus, the Supreme Lord himself, Govinda, married King Bhishmaka's daughter, Vaidarbhi Rukmini, who was a direct expansion of the Goddess of fortune [Sriyo maatraam]. (Bhagavata Purana 10.52.16) Dwaraka's citizens were overjoyed to see Krishna, the Lord of all opulence, united with Rukmini, the Goddess of fortune Rama.(SB 10.54.60) Lakshmi by Her portion took birth on earth as Rukmini in the family of Bhismaka.(Mahabharata Adi 67.156) Rukminidevi, the Queen Consort of Krishna is the Swarupa-shakti (Mulaprakriti), the essential potency of Krishna (Krsnatmika) and she is the Queen / Mother of the Divine World (Jagatkatri), Dwaraka / Vaikuntha. She was born at Haridwar and a royal princess from Vedic Aryan tribe. The daughter of a powerful king Bhishmaka. The Shrutis which are closely associated with the narrations of the pastimes of the Vraja-gopis with Svayam-rupa Bhagavan Shri Krishna, the Parabrahma, have declared this truth (Gopala-tapani Upanisad 57). They cannot be separated. As Lakshmi is Vishnu's Shakti (power or strength) so even as Rukmini is Krishna's strength. The Idu-Mishmi tribe of Arunanchal Pradesh believes that Rukmini belonged to the Idu-Mishmi tribe. Rukmini or Rakhumai is worshipped as the consort of Vithoba (an avatar of Krishna) in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. In 1480, Vadirajatirtha (1480–1600), the greatest saint in the Madhvacharya tradition, composed a famous work Rukminishavijaya glorifying Rukmini and Krishna in 1240 verses spread over 19 chapters.

The children of Rukminidevi and Krishna

The first son of Queen Rukmini was Pradyumna, and also born of her were Charudeshna, Sudesna and the powerful Charudeha, along with Sucharu, Charugupta, Bhadracharu, Charuchandra, Vicharu and Charu, the tenth (SB 10.61.8–9). Of them, Pradyumna was the crown prince of Dwaraka. After the disappearance of Krishna, after the Yadu massacre, Rukmini along with Jambavati and few other ladies ascends herself on Krishna's pyre. *As described above, in ‘Mahabharata’, Rukmini is considered as an incarnation of Goddess Laxmi and the queen of Krishna. Rukmini is also regarded as the incarnation of Radha in Hindu Society. There are many aspects of the life of Rukmini which absolutely match with the life of Radha. *Rukmini is said to be just spiritual representation of Radha. They are one. That’s why when Krishna is depicted with Radha we don’t see Rukmini and when he is depicted with Rukmini we don’t see Radha, both in temples and pictures. Moreover, we can notice the idols of Rukmini and Radha. They look same.

Krishna’s Chief Consort Rukmini was very envious due to frequent on and off references of Radha from Krishna’s own mouth. Many years after leaving Gokul-Vrindavan, Krishna happened to host the Vrajavasis who came to meet him at Kurukshetra. Radha was also among them. At night, when everyone withdrew to respective tents, Krishna asked Rukmini to arrange some milk for Radha who, he knew, used to take milk at night before retiring to bed. Rukmini did not like the idea but she decided to serve milk by herself because she wanted to test her too. So she personally brought very hot milk to Radha and asked her to quickly finish it so that she could do back feeling relieved. Quite obviously, Rukmini was a queen and her wish was Radha’s command, so she immediately obeyed and drank it. As the milk was very hot, Radha got her throat burnt but she didn’t complain. When Rukmini came back, to her utter surprise she noticed that Krishna’s throat and body was sore and aching. On inquiry, Krishna explained that this nemesis was caused to his body by her act of forcing Radha to drink hot milk. With utter guilt, Rukmini realized and acknowledged then the purity and perfection of Radha’s love for Krishna.

Once after dinner Rukmini gave a glass of milk to Krishna without a prior check. The milk was hot and on taking it Krishna instantly exclaimed with grief, “Radhe Radhe!” On this, Rukmini complained to Him what was there in Radha that he so much cared and loved Radha. While she too loved and cared for Him but He never called her name. At this, Krishna just smiled and asked Rukmini if she had ever met Radha. Next day Rukmini went to see Radha at her place. To her utter surprise, she found that beautiful Radha had painful blisters and sores on her entire body. It was revealed from further inquiry that it was the nemesis of Rukmini’s act of giving hot milk to Krishna in the previous night. The hot milk burnt Krishna’s heart, because Radha always lived in His heart, the same effect also passed on to her.

Once Muni Narada, famous for carrying mischiefs along, visited Krishna and Rukmini and she offered the best of fruits, nuts and milk to him. He, however, refused saying he was coming from Vrindavan and Radha’s hospitality has made him so belly-full that he can’t eat even a piece of grape. Rukmini was obviously not pleased with the reference of Radha. However, the conversation continued and Narada mentioned that everyone there was inquisitive about Krishna with the exception of Radha who was simply standing in a corner. With a glimpse on baffled Rukmini, Narada added when he asked Radha about her silence, she replied what to inquire about someone who was always with her. Narada intently watched the changing colours on Rukmini’s face who now reacted angrily whether his visit was to taunt her by telling that Radha didn’t feel the absence of Krishna. Then she added that Radha was Krishna’s past and that is where the matter should rest; and she knew there can’t be a greater lover of Krishna now than her and the topic must end here. After a few days, Krishna fell ill and a celestial vaidya (disguised Narada) came to attend him. He declared that Krishna was suffering from a debilitating disease and the only cure was that He must drink the water remains of washed feet of someone who deeply loved and adored Him. Rukmini was shocked, she indeed loved Krishna but couldn’t make Him to drink such water. She did love the lord, but she can’t make him to consume water which had washed her feet because it would be a sin. Other queens of Krishna too expressed the same dilemma. Then vaidya went to Radha and explained the problem to her; she without a second thought drew water in a pot pouring it on her feet and gave it to him saying no sin could be greater than the life of Krishna. Later vaidya revealed his identity as Narada and an embarassed Rukmini accepted that there was no greater lover of Krishna than Radha.

The teachings of the above stories

These stories while illustrating conflict of Rukmini and Radha end with a moral that two kinds of love exist in this world. 1. The first one is that which occurs in the established relationships while the other is one beyond any defined relationship. Rukmini’s love is that of the worldly relationship of mortals who seek love in return for love. Such a love is also constrained and bound by the contemporary ethos and laws of the society made do’s and don’ts. 2. On the other hand, Radha’s love is selfless, unconditional and immortal without expecting reciprocity. It is not within the boundaries of any social ethos, bonding or contract, therefore boundless, eternal and pure. This is where Radha’s love becomes great and excels over all others. True love does not bind but liberates and is beyond any age, space or time. So is the divine love between Radha and Krishna.

Radharani is not a different person from Krishna, or, rather, she is both one with and different from Him. How could two people be one person or one person be two? A simple example will illustrate how this is so. The sun cannot exist without the sunshine, nor the sunshine without the sun. We say, "the sun is in my room"—even though the sun itself is ninety-three million miles away—because the sun appears in the form of its energy. Therefore the energy (the sunshine) and the energetic (the sun) are simultaneously one and different. Similarly, Radha and Krishna are simultaneously one and different. Krishna, the self-effulgent Lord, is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and Srimati Radharani is His supreme pleasure energy. Together They constitute the complete Absolute Truth. According to the spiritual authorities, Krishna is the reservoir of all pleasure, and therefore He is all-attractive. Yet Krishna Himself derives pleasure from the service rendered by His devotees. Such devotional service attracts even Him. Krishna Himself, while speaking to a friend, confirms his as follows in Srimad Bhagavatam:"My dear Uddhava, you may know from Me that the attraction I feel for devotional service rendered by My devotees is not to be equaled even if one performs mystic yoga, philosophical speculation or ritualistic sacrifices, studies Vedanta, practices severe austerities or gives up everything in charity. These are, of course, very nice activities, but they are not as attractive to Me as the transcendental loving service rendered by My devotees." (Bhagavatam, 11.12.1) Krishna is full in six opulences: beauty, wealth, fame, strength, knowledge, and renunciation. No amount of material opulence, therefore, can attract Him. Just as one could not attract a millionaire by offering him a few dollars, one cannot attract Krishna merely by one's limited material opulence. Nevertheless, pure devotional service attracts even Krishna. This is the unique transcendental excellence of devotional service. Srimati Radharani is the embodiment of pure devotional service. No one can be a greater devotee than She. The very name Radharani comes from the Sanskrit word aradhana, which means "worship." Her name is Radharani because She excels all in worshiping Krishna. Although Krishna is so beautiful that He can attract millions of Cupids and is therefore called Madana-mohana, "the attractor of Cupid," Radharani can attract even Krishna. She is therefore called Madana-mohana-mohini—"the attractor of the attractor of Cupid." The same Krishna who is not attracted by any amount of material opulence finds Srimati Radharani irresistible. One time Krishna, to joke with the gopis, the cowherd girls of Vrndavana, was hiding Himself beneath a bush, but finally they spotted Him from a distance. Krishna then changed Himself into His four-armed form of Narayana. When the gopis approached and found Narayana instead of Krishna, they were not very interested in Him; only Krishna's original two-armed form attracted them. They therefore offered their respectful obeisances unto Lord Narayana and prayed that He would bestow upon them the benediction of Krishna's eternal association. Then they went on searching for Krishna. When Srimati Radharani passed by, however, Krishna tried to maintain His disguise as Narayana but was unable to do so; he kept slipping back into His original two-armed form. This illustrates the great influence of Srimati Radharani's pure transcendental love. The reciprocation of love between Radha and Krishna is the essence of spiritual love. Because Krishna is the origin of everything, He is the origin of love also. The attraction between boys and girls in the material world is a perverted reflection of the purely spiritual relationship between Radha and Krishna. One who thinks he can be happy through material sexual enjoyment cannot understand the relationship between Radha and Krishna; and, conversely, if one hears about Radha and Krishna from a bona fide spiritual master, his material sexual desires evaporate. In the material world, although one may profess true love, inwardly one's real desire is to enjoy his own senses. We love someone as long as he or she satisfies our senses, and when such sensual pleasure dwindles, the so-called love dwindles with it. Thus the love affair ends in separation or divorce. But pure devotees of Krishna on the spiritual platform have no desires to please themselves. They desire only to please Lord Krishna. This is true unalloyed love. The devotional service is under the control of Srimati Radharani. She is the presiding Deity of devotional service. Because She is very merciful, devotees especially take advantage of Her merciful nature to attain the service of Krishna. Indeed, although engagement is pure devotional service is rarely achieved, one can achieve it very easily by the grace of Srimati Radharani. Bhagavad-gita confirms that those who are truly mahatmas, great souls, take shelter of Krishna's daivi prakrti, or spiritual energy—Srimati Radharani. "Always chanting My glories," Lord Krishna declares, "endeavoring with great determination, bowing down before Me, these great souls perpetually worship Me with devotion." (Bg. 9.14) This devotional service is not an activity of the material world; it is fully spiritual because it is directly under the control of Krishna's spiritual energy—Srimati Radharani. To perform devotional service, one should follow in the footsteps of Srimati Radharani by performing pure devotional service to Krishna, without any concern for material profit. But one should not worship Krishna alone. Krishna is not complete without Srimati Radharani, as the sun is not complete without the sunshine. One should therefore worship both Radha and Krishna, for together They are the complete Absolute Truth.
