If you have never tried using cinnamon in your garden before, now is the perfect time to experiment with it! Below you will find ways to use cinnamon in your garden so you too can reap the benefits it offers. So grab a canister of cinnamon, or even a handful of cinnamon sticks, and start taking notes! What kind of cinnamon can I use in my garden?

You can use powdered cinnamon, cinnamon sticks, and even cinnamon oil for some of these tips. Remember if using cinnamon powder it is 100% cinnamon and NOT a cinnamon sugar mixture. 1. Keep ants out of plants and play areas.

They hate the smell! You can also use cinnamon oil or cinnamon sticks as opposed to powder. Cinnamon oil seems to have a stronger odor and lasts longer than cinnamon powder or sticks, so if you have a big ant problem oil may be a better solution for you. Refresh the scent by applying more cinnamon after a heavy rain or wind.

This cinnamon solution doesn’t kill the ants, it just repels them through the scent. Since ants are often attracted to sand boxes since kids drop snacks in the sand, this is a great solution to try as opposed to a chemical one.

2. Make your own pest repelling spray.

Another way to keep ants as well as other unwanted bugs out of your garden is to make your own pest repelling spray. This method is effective and works as well as store bought sprays with chemicals, which you may not be too fond of. To make your own natural pest repelling spray, add 20 drops of cinnamon oil to 2 cups of water. Shake well. Pour into a spray bottle. You can then use the pest repelling spray on any plants where ants or aphids are an issue. Reapply after a heavy rain or every week as needed.

3. Provide first aid to plant cuts and scrapes.

Sometimes plant stems get torn or chipped during transplanting or even from critters. If you notice this kind of breakage or damage on your plants, cinnamon can help and almost acts as a band aid. You can simply sprinkle cinnamon on the broken/exposed area and it will get hard to work at repairing it.

4. Protect your plant roots.

Before you transplant seedlings or start a plant from cuttings, dip the end of the stem in cinnamon powder. This will help give the plant a nutrient boost as well as protect the stem. If you love to grow plants such as hydrangeas from cuttings, this cinnamon trick is super helpful. Since most root boosting products are expensive, this is a great solution to try first.

5. Stop bug bites from itching.

If you love working in the garden but hate the itch of bug bites afterwards, cinnamon can help! Make a paste of cinnamon powder and coconut oil and apply it to the itchy area. You will find that this mixture helps with the itch while also keeping skin soft and nourished.
