Help Me God: A Prayer of Dependence

When we say, “God help me,” we are acknowledging that, above all else, we are dependent upon God. We are saying, “I don’t have the strength in and of myself to make it through these circumstances…but God does. My God is strong enough to sustain me, even though it may seem like everything is going to pieces.” When we say, “God help me,” we are agreeing with what the Psalmist said in Psalm 121:1-2:

I lift up my eyes to the hills.

From where does my help come?

My help comes from the Lord,

who made heaven and earth

Our help comes from one source and only one source: the living God who created the heavens and the earth. God is our refuge. Our fortress. We don’t need any other help. We don’t look for any other savior. We look to God and ONLY God to rescue us in our time of need. Often times we’re tempted to look to other sources for security and rescue. We look to money. We trust in our physical strength. We rely upon our resourcefulness. But when we pray, “God help me,” we’re saying, “I reject any hope other than God. He alone is my hope and stronghold.” Psalm 46:1 puts it this way, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” I love how it says that is a very present help in trouble. He’s not far off. He’s not distant. No, he’s right there with us, and he won’t leave us or forsake us in the midst of our trouble. When we’re struggling, when we’re weary, when we’re stumbling, we can know that he is with us every single step of the way. He is VERY present with us.

Prayer For Time Of Need

Father, I put my faith in you in this time of need. I ask for your help. Because you love me, I believe that you will give me the strength I need. I trust you to help me in my weakness and to respond to my prayers for help. I pray that you would meet my every need and have faith that you will. I am in Christ, and because I am in Him I believe that you will bless me. In Jesus name, amen.

One of the reasons God loves to answer the prayer, “God help me,” is that it gives all the glory to him. When God alone is the one who can deliver us it means God alone gets all the glory when the deliverance comes. We certainly don’t get any glory. We’re weak and weary and calling out for God’s help. When God comes through in big, awesome ways, he gets all the glory and praise.

For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead (2 Corinthians 1:7-9). Paul felt that he had been given a death sentence. Like he had no way out. Like it was completely dark with no stars to be seen anywhere. He was in such desperate straights that he despaired of life itself. So Paul was forced to rely solely upon God for the rescue. And God did indeed come to his rescue. In the next verse, Paul says, “He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.” God received all the glory for helping Paul. All the honor and praise and worship went to him, not Paul and his companions. God loves to answer the prayer, “God help me,” because it brings him such glory.

Lord, I really need your peace right now. I ask that you would fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I experience your peace. Please fill my heart with the calm trust that only you provide. Because you are a good Father, I know that you want me to have your peace. So I pray that you would give me rest. In Jesus name, amen.

You have all the answers, and will lead me and guide me. You are the Good Shepherd who will take me to still waters and green pastures.
