It works out fine if you do exactly what you said you were going to do. Most of the time though, plans fall through or change completely. A good majority of the time they don't actually end up happening at all. When your plan falls through, no matter if you had the best intentions when you made them, your friend will be very disappointed. Immagine if you never told your friend that you were going to help them out, or perform a random act of kindness for them in the future. Someone with no expectation of your generosity would be overjoyed for any thoughtful act you did for them. Robert Green writes about this principle in his book the 48 Laws of Power, in chapter three: Conceal Your Intentions. The third law isn't just about looking out for others, like in the scenario above. This law is, also in part, about thwarting your enemies attempts to hinder your goals and ambitions. When your adversaries, whether in business, sports, or in life know exactly what you are going to do it becomes much easier to stop you from doing so. However, by concealing your intentions they have no way of knowing what moves you are going to make next. Therefore, you are free to go out and crush your goals. An effective method of concealing your intentions is by acting in ways in which no one would expect you to act normally. For example, in order to keep others guessing, you might support a cause that you would normally be opposed to. This allows you to make moves in plain sight while moving toward your goal. In a perfect world, you would be supporting this cause to get some sort of gain out of it while still confusing your enemies. Green outlines this technique using Otto von Bismarck's lust for a war with Austria. Bismarck was known for wanting to destroy Austria and having a desire to showcase his home county of Prussia's might whenever possible. It came about that the politicians and officials in Prussia were, after years of being appalled at the idea, ready for a war with Austria. Bismarck knew that this was not the right time. Austria had a great military, far larger and better trained than Prussia's. If he were given control of the war he would suffer a miserable defeat, and never again get the chance to battle against Austria. He took to the floor before the king. Bismarck gave a passionate and heartfelt speech of long-term peace, a speech completely condemning the senseless killing of war. The king, moved by his speech, ordered his troops to stand down. Years later, when Prussia was stronger and had more time to prepare for the assault, Bismarck took to the floor again, this time advocating for war. He spoke of the same acts of Austria that the politicians spoke of originally when they advocated for the war. The king, again bewildered by his sudden change of heart, gave him what he wanted. Bismark finally got his long-awaited war with Austria and all the glory that came with winning the war. Like the king of Prussia, people rely instinctively on appearances and what they see. It's extremely easy to use this to your advantage. Other than the obvious deceptions you could pull, try to use this toward you next few goals. Work on them in secret. Don't tell anyone about them. When no one knows you are working toward a great thing and then you achieve it, the achievement looks far more impressive. You have probably seen this in action. Think of a friend that you know is no more intelligent or no more skilled than you. There has probably been someone like this who won a huge award out of nowhere or made a huge sale that no one knew was going to happen. The huge surprise can make your outlook on them change drastically. You start to think that they have more skill than you and it starts to bring out your insecurities when in reality this person might have just gotten lucky.

This person probably works in secret most of the time and probably puts in long hours. Out of these long hours, there could be 20 losses and only one win. If they were to showcase the truth their public image would fall considerably with a 1 to 20 win-loss ratio. However, they work to keep the truth out of the public eye. We will never know about anything, but their massive, seemly random, cooly calculated wins. This isn't to take away from anyone's success. If there is one thing you should take from this article it's that there is a time to be perfectly honest and there is a time to work in secret in order to hide some losses. As long as, you do not break any promises or go back on your word this is a perfectly honest principle and one that will most certainly help you get to where you want to go.
