So you might be wondering right now, what in the world is Chi (or Qi) anyway? Is it My “Cheee” Journey or My “Ch-eye” Journey? (it’s pronounced “Chee” for the record). Chi is the life force and flow of energy we can’t see but may experience. It’s what binds us all together, it flows like a stream and moves within us and amongst us. It’s the energy that drives us and connects us. Some suppress it and are in a state of constant conflict with it, others embrace it, understand it and flow with it. Although Qi Gong (or Chi Gong) has been practiced in the east for thousands of years, the west is only more recently becoming accustomed to it. Obviously there is a whole lot more that goes into understanding and harnessing Chi, but for now here are 5 ways that you can get a quick sense of whether you have found yours.

1. You have learned to listen to and trust your feelings

and understand that a feeling is the ultimate way we communicate with ourselves. Recognise If you are able to get a sense of what you’re feeling and when, you can understand and learn to trust it, then you are well on your way to finding your Chi.

2. You feel connected

Chi is an energy that connects all things.

Suppressing the flow of your Chi will not allow you to feel connected; you may lack that little sense of belonging and may feel like you are missing some meaning or purpose in your life. In contrast, when you feel connected, with your self, with others and all things, that’s a pretty good clue that your Chi is in check.

3. You flow

Chi Flows. It’s not rigid and it doesn’t like to be suppressed.

It doesn’t form unhealthy attachments to ideas, people or things.

It’s adaptable in form, but not in its purpose. When we stop the flow, when we stagnate, get overly attached to ideas, expectations, feelings, people or things, our Chi is also stifled – the mind also has a role to play in this. If you flow with life and you are able to show gratitude in all things, chances are you have removed some of the blocks and allowed your Chi to flow again.

4. Experience inner strength, empowerment and peace all at once

You find comfort knowing that there is much more to life than your circumstance or what you can tangibly see and measure. Reconnecting with the flow of energy and harnessing your Chi in the right way is an infinite source of peace and strength.

5. Your life has a sense of purpose

Having a sense of purpose is very different to having a specific purpose (or goal). Understanding your flow of energy and how it relates to all other things helps put things into perspective, you are guided by something bigger than yourself. You’re driven by feelings of connection, peace and strength and you value them more than any material possession. Your decision making processes are also guided by this deeper sense of purpose.
