Problem: Can cinnamon oil repel bugs? Materials: 3 apples

1 teaspoon of vegetable oil

1 teaspoon of olive oil

1 teaspoon of cinnamon oil

3 plates

3 labels

Permanent marker

Timer

Knife

Outdoor spot with plenty of mosquitoes Procedure: Have an adult cut your apple in to four equal sections. Eat one of the apple sections -- this is important for the sake of deliciousness. Put your remaining three apple slices on three separate plates. Use a permanent marker to label each plate with the name of the oil you will be testing: vegetable oil, olive oil and cinnamon oil. Put the plates in the outdoor spot. Spread the plates out so that there is at least a foot between each plate. Pour the vegetable over one apple slice, olive oil over another and cinnamon oil over the last. Make sure the oil you pour matches up with each label. Set your timer for 30 minutes. Leave the apples alone. Do not go near the plates. When the timer dings, slowly approach the plates. Which apple slice has the least amount of mosquitoes on it? Results: The cinnamon oil apple as the least amount of mosquitoes on it. Why? Cinnamon oil has chemicals that kill mosquito eggs. Your Feb. 25 review of Ira Levin's novel "Sliver" speaks of Felice, a cat, who "behaves like no real cat this reviewer has ever heard of, distinguishing between good people and bad (as if a cat would ever care about human morals)." Although a cat may not care (as that word is generally used) about human morals, cats can and do distinguish between good and bad people, and are excellent judges of human character and emotion. My cats, for instance, will shy away from certain new acquaintances almost immediately; and I have found that, in most such cases, those people end up being of questionable character. More obvious, though, is a cat's ability to zero in on human emotions. When I am weary or depressed, my cats will inevitably come and sit next to me, offering me comfort and love. Yet when I am angry or annoyed, my cats will remain aloof, allowing me to deal with myself at my own pace. And during those times when my ex and I would argue -- ending up in separate rooms -- the male cat would immediately run to her, while the female cat would come to me -- again offering love and affection when we most needed it, and giving us the chance to calm ourselves by stroking them (the calming influence of stroking cats is used as therapy for older people with high blood pressure).
