Raise your hand if you think cinnamon is loaded with benefits. Just like you, we feel the same. This rich, aromatic spice is not just flavourful but also packs a punch with its nutrients. But it can also have some side-effects if you consume it more than it’s required. Most of us tend to overdo anything, when we realise that it’s good for our health. And then we complain that we haven’t received any benefits! We have with us, nutritionist Manisha Chopra, who educates us on how over-consuming cinnamon has adverse effects on our health. That’s because regular cinnamon contains high amounts of coumarin (an aromatic organic chemical compound), which contributes to liver damage and cancer. Also, read: 5 amazing ways to use cinnamon or dalchini for glowing and healthy skin Shocked? Well, here are five more side effects of consuming too much cinnamon listed by Ms Chopra:

1. It can lead to respiratory problems

“Sometimes we tend to inhale ground cinnamon while eating or even preparing meals. It can trigger coughing, sneezing, and difficulty in breathing. People with asthma should also be careful while using it,” she says.

2. It can also led to allergies

Cinnamon can also cause allergies like skin irritation, and stomach issues in some people. So, be careful while eating cinnamon and observe your eating patterns to know if you’re allergic to cinnamon.

3. It can make you dizzy

“Consuming too much cinnamon can drop sugar levels in your body. Due to this you might feel dizzy, experience fatigue, and suffer from anxiety,” warns Manisha.

4. It can cause digestive problems

In some people, consuming too much cinnamon can also lead to a burning sensation in the stomach. It is not just painful, but can even cause stomach ulcers, and cancer. All in all, it hampers the digestive processes, so be very careful!

5. It can cause mouth sores

Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde, and this is the main reason due why some people experience mouth ulcers. Some people also complain about burning and an itchy sensation on the tongue or in gums. “I would recommend 2 to 4 grams or approx 1 teaspoon of cinnamon in a day. Anything more that can be problematic. Also, if you’re taking some medication, then you have to be cautious, as it can also react with that,” she suggests.

These people should refrain from cinnamon, according to Manisha

If you already have or have previously had liver disease

If you get mouth ulcers easily, then you should be cautious while eating cinnamon Cinnamon can cause premature labour or uterine contractions. So, pregnant women and lactating women should avoid eating too much cinnamon. Gastroparesis patients should also limit their cinnamon consumption as their bodies are not able to digest it properly.

Compounds present in cinnamon have properties to trouble diabetic patients.

Asthma patients should be careful while using cinnamon. They should make sure that they don’t accidentally inhale cinnamon because it causes instant cough and breathing issues. It’s not that we are dismissing the benefits that cinnamon has to offer, but too much of it can be harmful for you. So, watch out for the quantity if you want to stay safe.

How much cinnamon is OK daily?

Per WebMD, a daily intake of ½ to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon per day is the limit, per some experts. This equals 2 to 4 grams of cinnamon a day, with the U.S. Department of Health saying that up to 6 grams of cinnamon per day is safe (via The Whole U).

The Maximum Amount Of Cinnamon You Can Safely Eat Each Day

Correction 4/25/22: A previous version of this article stated it is thought to be unsafe to consume more than 0.05 milligrams of cassia cinnamon per day for every pound you weigh. It is recommended people not consume more than 0.05 milligrams of coumarin per day for every pound you weigh, which is a chemical compound present in the cinnamon. No need to put down that cinnamon roll, or delicious piece of cinnamon toast. Eating cinnamon in moderation is just fine, and actually provides quite a few health benefits. But there is a fine line with cinnamon you don't want to cross, as adverse effects can occur if you eat too much of a certain kind on a daily basis. Yep, you heard right. There's more than one kind of cinnamon. There are two actually, observes Healthline: Ceylon and cassia. The geographically astute may note that the former country of Ceylon is now known as Sri Lanka. The country may have changed its name, but this form of cinnamon has not, and indeed its namesake land provides about 80% of the global supply of what's known as true cinnamon, per WebMD, all sourced from the bark of evergreen trees. Cassia, by contrast, combines cinnamon and cassia, the latter of which is made similarly — from evergreen trees in China and Southeast Asia — but is considered lower quality. Cassia is by far the most common form of cinnamon used by U.S. consumers (per Healthline), which is an important distinction when it comes to daily usage recommendations.
