Candle emissions can contribute to increased exposure to benzene, toluene, xylene and lead, as well as other potentially carcinogenic volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds. Candle emissions may also include soot, a fine particulate matter which can be toxic. Soot particles can travel deep into the lungs. Those with asthma, lung or heart disease are particularly vulnerable.
