Do Catholics worship the saints instead of God?

We only worship God. But in addition to praying to God, Catholics also pray to the Saints. When we pray to a Saint, we are simply asking them to pray for us just like we would ask a friend here on earth to pray for us. We DO NOT IDOLIZE the statues or paintings.

Statues and Paintings of the Saints

“The Mass- and I mean every single Mass- is Heaven on earth. Literally.” -Scott Hahn I remember as a Protestant, my first time stepping foot inside of a Catholic Church; it was COVERED in statues and stained glass windows. Although it was breathtakingly beautiful, I was immensely distracted by all that was “going on”. I recall thinking, “My church doesn’t have any of this so that we can actually focus on having a relationship with God.” At the time, I didn’t understand that these things actually turn our gaze to Him! By seeing beautiful artwork that depicts aspects of either Christ’s life, or a Saint’s life, we are reminded of the POWER, AUTHORITY, and LOVE of God. Catholic Churches have always prioritized incorporating art into their architecture. Originally, it was a way to visually portray the stories in the Bible because many people didn’t know how to read for themselves. As the Catholic author Scott Hahn writes, “The Mass-and I mean every single Mass-is heaven on earth. Literally.” Because Jesus is present with each of us in the Eucharist during Mass, Mass really is Heaven on Earth as Christ is present. Today, we keep decorating our Churches with art even though people are able to read the stories for themselves. Why then? Because it makes the Church feel and even look more like Heaven. In Heaven we will be surrounded by those Saints! So the architecture gives us a little glimpse of what that will look like. As we encounter Jesus in the Eucharist, the artwork displayed around us showcases the Communion of Saints that we are a part of (explained in part 1).

We are not idolizing them.

The images and artwork simply REMIND us of our brothers and sisters in Christ. We keep photographs in our homes of our loved ones who have passed on not to worship them, but to simply encourage us to think of them. Similarly, we display different Saints in our churches (and homes) to remind us of them.

Can saints talk to us?

In rare situations, saints may speak to some people. Most often, the saints help us through their encouraging example to live the Good News generously.

Q: Do you think that saints can help us out? Can you be sure that they are there and that sometimes they talk to you?

A: I think saints help us out primarily by inspiring us to believe that holiness is possible for us—right here, right now. At Mass, one of the prefaces for the saints says: “God, you renew the Church in every age by raising up men and women outstanding in holiness, living witnesses of your unchanging love. They inspire us by their heroic lives, and help us by their constant prayers to be the living sign of your saving power.” In rare situations, saints may speak to some people. Most often, the saints help us through their encouraging example to live the Good News generously.
